Ok, I just started watching this. Bought the whole series on the reccomendation of a friend and I frikkin love it. There isn't one bad thing about this show. I'm gonna finish watching the series before I watch the movie. Can't believe it was cancelled. It's a travesty.
It's great! I never even knew it aired. My mom recomended it to me, but I kept blowing it off. I gave it a chance and got hooked immediately. Great story, humor and lots of unexpected twists. Josh Whedon really does some great story telling. I should probobly start watching the Buffy series, another show I've never given a chance.
Watching the first and only season for the third time, this thing would have been huge had more people seen it.. coming from somebody who doesn't follow any shows on T.V.
My boyfriend's a big firefly fan and got me to watch it, its an awesome show. River's so cool...
"Your Bible's broken"
I haven't seen the film yet but I shall sometime soon.
To other firefly fans i'd recomend Wonderfalls. It is also an awesome show and one of its writers, Tim Minear was the executive producer for firefly. Its not a sci-fi but its a really cool show about a girl who has a philosophy major and decides to work in retail at niagra falls so people have little expectation of her. Anyway plastic figurines of animals talk to her and make her do things its a really funny clever show. It also has the actress who plays Kaylee in a couple of episodes. Its another of those shows that was treated crappily by fox.
i rented the movie in jan 06(wanted to see it in the theatres, but i had a world series to attend). i was blown away. I had a high reccommendation that prompted me to see it. I LOVED the space battle.
I finally picked up both the movie and tv show dvds during xmas 06 season(best buy had serenity for 10 bucks and target had firefly for 18). i havent watched all of the show, but i dig what i've seen so far.
it's clear as to why fox dumped it. Fox is lowest common denominator programming. Bill O'riley(who i hate), simpsons(which lost it's touch years ago), and family guy are all examples of this thinking.
A show that needs to be nurtured? Why bother? I'm still suprised that Arrested Development lasted 3 years.
Fox dropped the ball on this series on too many levels. First, they placed the show on Friday nights, not the greatest TV night there is to begin with. Second, their marketing campaign was piss-poor and ill-sighted. They tried to advertise the series as being about "a hooker in space" or "a girl in a box". Third, Fox expected the series to achieve instant cult status, whereas shows like Buffy and Angel needed at least a couple seasons to develop properly. And most importantly, they showed the episodes out of order! The first episode to be broadcast was "The Train Job". Fox didn't air the introductory two-part "Serenity" pilot until the end. Needless to say, the combination of all these factors through viewers for a loop and the show never had a chance to succeed.
Yep. I'd have to agree with this. As Fox has done so many times, they screwed the pooch.
Watching the Josh Whedon commentary on Serenity right now and found it amusing that Mal (Serenity's version of Han Solo) shot 3 unarmed people in the movie, which happened to be a partial reaction to the dissatisfaction with Lucus changing the Han/Greedo shoot first scene in Star Wars.. good stuff!
admittedly i've never seen firefly... in fact i never even heard of it til it was off the air. i will say this, though: i will watch it one day, because joss whedon is an AMAZING writer.
Why bother to vote to have it cancelled/finished and thus deprive other people of something they enjoy???
If you don't like it, don't watch it, but why deny other people their enjoyment?
Btw, I've never watched an episode of Firefly, but still.
Because it's funny. Besides, I didn't take the vote seriously. I didn't/don't think it made the slightest difference. I got fed up of it being on TV ALL the time. My boyfriend was obsessed. Even he laughed though when I said I voted against it.

I agree your vote didn't cause the cancellation!
I just found it odd you took the time to vote in the first place to have it cancelled if you've never even watched it.
Inara: What did I say to you about barging into my shuttle?
Mal: That it was manly and impulsive?
Inara: Yes, precisely. Only the exact phrase I used was "don't".
Alliance Commander: You fought with Captain Reynolds in the war?
Zoe: Fought with a lot of people in the war.
Alliance Commander: And your husband?
Zoe: Fight with him sometimes, too.
Mal: Sure. It would be humiliating. Having to lie there while the better man refuses to spill your blood. Mercy is the mark of a great man. (lightly stabs man with the sword) Guess I'm just a good man. (stabs him again) Well, I'm all right.
Jayne: (mock reading Simon's journal) Dear Diary...today I was pompous and my sister was crazy. (flips page) Today, we were kidnapped by hill folk never to be seen again. It was the best day ever.
Mal: Well, look at this! Appears we got here just in the nick of time. Whaddya suppose that makes us?
Zoe: Big damn heroes, sir.
Mal: Ain't we just!
Book: What are we up to, sweetheart?
River: Fixing your Bible.
Book: I, um...(alarmed)...what???
River: Bible's broken. Contradictions, false logistics - doesn't make sense.(she's marked up the bible, crossed out passages)
Book: No, no. You - you can't...
River: So we'll integrate non-progressional evolution theory with God's creation of Eden. Eleven inherent metaphoric parallels already there. Eleven. Important number. Prime number. One goes into the house of eleven eleven times, but always comes out one. Noah's ark is a problem.
Book: Really?
River: We'll have to call it early quantum state phenomenon. Only way to fit 5000 species of mammal on the same boat. (rips out page)
Zoe: Preacher, don't the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killing?
Book: Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.
Wash: Little River just gets more colorful by the moment. What'll she do next?
Zoe: Either blow us all up or rub soup in her hair. It's a toss-up.
Wash: I hope she does the soup thing. It's always a hoot, and we don't all die from it.

You should have watched it. I had no interest in the show until my mom made me watch it on DVD years after it was cancelled.. and my mom doesn't even like Sci-Fi. The show really isn't Sci-Fi at all, it just takes place in a Sci-Fi setting.

Who's saying I didn't watch it? You're the second person who's said that now. I haven't seen the movie though but it's upstairs. :rolleyes :
Planning is underway for many screenings of Serenity to raise money for Equality Now, which is Joss Whedon's favorite charity. Check the link below to see if there's a screening planned in your area.

Now it makes more sense given the context.
