Donkey Kong for GameBoy Help Needed

I realize this game came out 14 years ago, but i never had a gameboy. Shoot all i ever had was a nes and 64 and now a wii and a ds. I'm playing this on an emulator on my wii and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how I get past Donkey Kong on the fourth level, where there are little birds flying around. What do i need to do. I just tried hitting him with the hammer but he picked me up and smashed me like a hammer. Please any guidance would be awesome.

Let us know how it goes. I'm probably going to download an emulator and play it myself. I had a lot of fun with this game when I was a kid.
