Donkey Kong for GameBoy Help Needed

I realize this game came out 14 years ago, but i never had a gameboy. Shoot all i ever had was a nes and 64 and now a wii and a ds. I'm playing this on an emulator on my wii and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how I get past Donkey Kong on the fourth level, where there are little birds flying around. What do i need to do. I just tried hitting him with the hammer but he picked me up and smashed me like a hammer. Please any guidance would be awesome.
I’ve seen Pearl Jam 25 times, Eddie Vedder 9 times, and Brad once.

    Just type in what game you're looking for, what platform (pick the gameboy version) and go to FAQS. It'll give you a play by play of how to get past whatever point you're at. Be careful, they're addicting!

    Let us know how it goes. I'm probably going to download an emulator and play it myself. I had a lot of fun with this game when I was a kid.
