D-Day June 6th 1944

May we never forget those brave men and boys who came onto shore along the French coast. Take a moment this morning to remember the sacrifice so many of them made for us.

I think this is one thread we can all get behind. A noble cause so many gave their lives for.

I feel at times that people around my age forget or have no idea what happened on this day. I hope I'm wrong but I worry about that. We owe those men so much and to not forget. So many of them payed with there lives for our freedom. War is hell but freedom isn't free either.

This kind of goes with a story I read earlier today ... a survivor of the Battle of the Somme. It's hard to imagine 300,000 killed, 1,500,000 casualties in one battle.

So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

It was a prolonged battle...really a meat grinder...in WWI, the technology had surpassed the tactics. The battles between the Russians and the Turks were just as bad.

Also 66 yrs The Battle of Midway took place. Huge navel battle and victory for the U.S. Of course many lives were lost in that battle so its hard to say victory. But it was a important victory because it weakened the Japanese fleet.

I'm not trying to sound like a now it all. But I had two Grandfathers that served in WWII and took part in D-Day. Growing up I learned alot from them. And as they both grew older they finally started talking about what they did during the war. Both have passed away so I feel it's important to remember them. And not forget what their generation did so we could all enjoy the freedom that many of us have.

One of them was a gunner on a ship and my other Grandfather landed on Omaha. He told me yrs b4 he died that he saw things that no man should ever see. He watched Saving Private Ryan just once and said it was just like that but 10 times worse. Talking about the beginning of the movie and how bad it was.

If anything I'm glad some of you learned something today. lol

    Not being a smartass I swear. :)

wow, i love hearing about those stories....not the part about seeing things that no one should see, but the fact that they experienced it and lived through it and have amazing stories to tell. and i cannot watch those movies!

i knew about this event in history, but sometimes we need a reminder. and i know you are not being a smartass. ;)

My Grandfather was in Air Corps....North Africa and Italy...the Fightin' 15th Air Force. He's still with us....and loves to tell the tales.

I agree, I feel America has a lot to learn and thank for that Generation. People today can't understand what they went through growing up during the depression and to have fought a war against all odds during the scariest time in world history.

Great work to bring this up. My grandad went into France just less than a week after the D Day landings, he used to tell us little bits about it, like apart from everything else, they just slept rough wherever they found shelter for all the time they were there, 'clearing out'. I'll just use his case as an example, it's amazing to think they just took this guy from down a coal mine and gave him basic training and a rifle, and said, "there you go son, go save the world". The greatest generation for sure, no doubt about that.
    And he's still going, 96!
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....

    That's so awesome!!!

Well, even though his body is giving out, his mind is still sharp as a tac.
Just think, down a coal mine at 14 years old, married at 18, by mid 20's there's 3 kids and you're working after the mine, on building sites to make extra money...then you get called in to fight in the war!!!
Whenever I stop and think about it like that, it amazes me ever more, awesome people, every one of them.

And IMO I don't think another generation could do what they did. Thanks for sharing your story about your grandad. :)
