Crates seem to work very well. It might help if you bring the crate into your bedroom. That's usually enough closeness for a dog. After a short time she'll start to feel safe in your house and the mud room will be OK.

Our dogs sleep in the utility room until they're trustworthy enough to have the run of the house. Scout hasn't reached that age yet. I'm really convinced that our dogs need to be near us at night. But I don't start at that point.

I was crate-phobic till Lisa and now I'm a big crate supporter.

crates are also helpful when you travel. When we go on the road, we find pet friendly lodging. The dogs stay in the crate in the car, and when we get there, we bring the crate into the room. The dogs know when they are in the crate it's 'quiet time' and we've had several hotel owners comment how good and quiet the dogs are.

We lost our sweet Jake a few months ago. I miss him terribly. We are now a one dog family but I still catch myself saying "the dogs" or "they". Even though losing them is absolutely the worst part of being a dog owner, the good still outweighs the bad by far.

How did Winnie sleep last night?

She has been doing pretty well, though overnight and just today it seems like she has been losing her early awesome house training, which I think is to be expected. Especially since we are feeding her and feeding her good food, which she hasn't had.

Woke up this morning to it by the door and just stopped home during work and she has one in her mud room area.

That's one reason why I don't initially let dogs have run of the house.
She will take some time to adjust to living with you. She's had uncertainty for a while and it will be a while before she feels like she's really found a home.

Our Penny was a rescue several years ago and in some ways she settled in right away and in others was very insecure for a long time. She was really insecure about food. She ate everything like she hadn't been fed for days and she kept that up for several months.

Good to know. Thank you. Yeah, we decided we are keeping her in that area for now. Fingers crossed.

Yes, Winnie eats like she has never eaten before as well. And yeah, she is settling into certain things well and others not so much.

Dogs have a spiritual purpose. The opportunity to love a dog and to treat it with kindness is an opportunity for a lost and selfish human heart to be redeemed. They are powerless and innocent, and it is how we treat the humblest among us that surely determines the fate of our souls.
