No, but a new Krav Mega place opened up a 5min walk from our house and we are thinking of sending our son to one of their afterschool programs.

    Sounds like a good idea!

I think it's a little more practical than karate.

I think every kid should learn how to properly defend themselves.

I'm about to start training in San Diego.

I wanted to take lessons but the closest place was 45 min away...not accounting for traffic. That would not work in the evenings. :(

You should do it though! :)

    Yeah...

I start this week. It's not a typical self defense class. Its a full contact (with pads) class.

Oddly enough a guy I work with is opening up a Ju Jitsu gym and he wants me to join.

I'm gonna be a lean mean Pearl Jam Lovin' ass kicking machine! :)

i don't know if you've heard of a series called "fight quest" on the discovery channel or not, stickfig13, but last season each episode was devoted to immersing the two hosts into learning a certain martial art and then doing a demo or real fight once their week long training was complete. they did one on krav maga in israel. it was quite interesting. personally, i'm not a fan of the training and think training arts with more technique like muay thai or jiu-jitsu are better self defense methods...but i guess it's certainly worth a look into it to see if you like it. i'm not just basing my opinion on the one show, i've seen many other things on krav maga too.

one thing that can be said of it is that it does give you training for real life or death situations, and could be good for learning to stay calm in those situations. i'm not sure. i do know i wouldn't want to be a part of the training sessions with throat attacks and groin stirkes! :D it certainly is a brutal style, but one that as i mentioned is more of a situational benefit than it is a technique benefit. not sure if you would agree or not, but in any case, enjoy! it's all a matter of personal preference and you never know until you check it out, i guess.

be sure to take a look into the jiu-jitsu if the opportunity is there, though! :)

    I did see that show!

I tend to agree with you. However, I think Krav has elements that would allow you to handle real life situations involving weapons. Knives, Guns, Sticks....and like you said, it focuses on the mental aspect of an attack.

Apparently your analytical brain function shuts down and fight or flight instinct comes into play in a real attack. Krav teaches you to stay mentally strong and use your technique.

Like you said, Ju Jitsu and Muay Thai are very useful too. Ju Jitsu will be a good compliment to my training as well.

IMO....Ju Jitsu is the least useful in a real life attack. How many times have you seen a street fight where somebody pulls off a solid arm bar or kimora?

    What do you think?

yes, you are right! that is one thing i forgot to mention. the training techniques for defending against weapon attacks. good point. i have seen some useful stuff in that aspect of the krav maga.

as far as the jiu-jitsu goes, i am far from an expert haha :D i've only done a few basic submission training courses for work when i was working as a doorman, and what i've learned through intructional demos and documentaries. i would say there are aspects of it that are very useful in either defusing situations or controlling someone if they have attacked you and your intention is merely to defend until you get help or break a limb if you have to. most of the stuff we did was about regaining control on the ground and standing arm locks / wrist locks, chokes, etc. most fights i've seen have gone to the ground, but as you said, it's a little different trying to pull off an armbar on concrete than it is on a gym mat! :D i've seen a lot of people choked out, however.

just my thoughts, but i just wanted to chime in since someone was talking about martial arts! :):D

be careful with the groin shots! :D no really, don't knock it til you've tried it, eh? keep us updated on what you think of it and how the training goes for you.

I think I like the weapon aspect a lot. Nowadays people don't seem to get robbed without a weapon being involved. Whether or not I have the balls to disarm someone with a gun in my face is another story...

My decision to try Krav Maga was made when I heard that Law Enforcment and Military use these methods in their training. I figured that if it was good enough for them then it's good enough for me.

You make a good point....All fights end up on the ground! That makes Ju Jitsu waaaay more useful than I thought.

I'll try and avoid groin shots as much as possible! Any man knows that getting hit in the groin will cancel out all technique! :)

It seems like you're interested in MMA...You should join a gym!

I took Krav Maga for about a year and LOVED it. I highly recommend it. I am trying to get my wife to take it now. I would still be taking it now if it wasn't for my obsession with other sports (volleyball, darts, softball, poker and flag football).

The basis of the art is to defend yourself. It is not about picking a fight or just fighting someone for the hell of it. It is all about if your life is in danger, hurt your opponent and get the hell out of there. It is a great art to take.
Hey, you wouldn't hire a clown to fix a leak in the jon so why do you let these hooligans tear down the biz? YEEAAHHH. I don't care if he is Mr. Notorious BIG, can he croon?

indeed. better to have trained the situation at least and see what happens when you face it than to go in without that experience.

sorry to keep mentioning the pills! :D i just have seen a few demos where a guy takes a groin shot and then is still unmercifully kicked while he's down. it's crazy!

yeah, i definitely have a great deal of interest in mma, and had planned to start some jiu-jitsu lessons at a school that opened up in my neighbourhood last summer, but i just haven't been able to afford it yet (also laziness...haha). i think i may have a better option coming up, though, as one of my friends who i used to work the door with has a brother coming back from brazil soon after spending a couple of months training at a school down there. he wants to start doing some intsruction when he gets back, but he's only a blue belt so far, so he will probabaly let us roll with him if we help him get a space cleared up in his garage or basement and put some mats down. he's spent several months in thailand as well so he 's somewhat knowledgeable in muay thai, which is helpful too.

i'm looking forward to when he gets back. i guess he was telling my friend that going from his gym to the gym in brazil was like going from playschool to getting his phd immediately. :D

Yeah...The MMA gyms are not cheap! That is one reason why I have put this off for so long. One gym wanted close to $200 an month!

I recently had a co-worker attacked and beaten pretty bad. So I figured that was a sign from god! :)

    Plus it looks like fun!

I gotta watch my "Pills" though....classic!

Oh, make sure you wear a cup...this is no joke. One of the things they teach you is to go for the nuts. Hey, if your life is in danger you are not going to talk the guy into a fair fight. Do whatever you can to get out of the situation....punch / kick him in the nuts, use elbows, poke his eyes, whatever you have to do to keep you and your family safe.

I've been looking into different martial arts, I'd like to follow a few classes after I'm through with physiotherapy. I used to do gymnastics and although I love it, it's time for something else. All the Krav Maga clubs are too far away. I think I might go for Jiu Jitsu (Brazilian, not the Japanese Jujutsu), Aikido and maybe karate. And let's not forget Chessboxin', I'd love to master that wu-tang style.
    THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

Yeah, they put you through hell. In my classes they wouldn't even start the workout until you did 2 min of push-ups and 2 min of sit-ups. Now 2 min doesn't sound long by try and to either of them without stopping for 2 min.

I'm glad you enjoyed the class...now comes the hard part...sticking to it.

So I'm going on 4 months since I started training.....

I'm testing into Level 2 (next belt level) in November! Also starting a "fight" class this month where I will actually get to do some serious sparring. Minus the groin shots and headbutts... :)

I have to say, it was a little hard coming from a "traditional sport" (Baseball, basketball...) background to martial arts. I never threw a roundkick to the knee when I was playing basketball.... :)
