I was just interested to see if you all Volunteer, and what you do?

I just signed up for Volunteer Orientation at PAWS animal shelter in Chicago. The earliest they have is in March, but better later then never right? They have a ton of programs you can sign up for once you go through orientation. I am looking to be an adoption counselor. I absolutely LOVE animals and since I am the crazy cat lady who has now adopted 4 cats, and is at maximum capacity here, I am going to spend my weekends matching families up with new furry friends.

I feel really good about it. I have a lot free weekends, and I feel like this would be such a great thing to do with my time.

Sort of. I write Sports for the University newspaper. It's on my own time for no pay, so it's technically volunteer work, but I'm not exactly helping anyone.

I volunteer at our local humane society doing the accounting. I started out with the animals but just couldn't do it. I wanted to bring them all home. I am also a last resort foster home. :)

Yes, for a camp in the Summer for kids, also I try and help people find their lost pets. It breaks my heart to see a "lost pet" sign. If they are in my area I do whatever I can to help look for that lost animal.

i volunteer for philadelphia cares. so far i've done a variety of stuff with it - cleaned up the waterworks, bingo at a nursing home, helping out with the philly marathon, etc.

it's nice b/c you can get variety by picking all different projects and you can be as active as you want, depending on what you have time to do.

I used to volunteer at a soup kitchen in college. I volunteer for the Red Cross a good bit and help out with the Toys for Tots drive at Christmas time among other drives.

  • I do!

Canadian Cancer Society - only for fundraising events

ALS Society (Lou Gehrig's) - only for fundraising events

Good Shepherd Centres - as a friendly visitor at an AIDS hospice. Basically I get to hang out with the patients, help make dinner, feed the patients, clean up, watch tv with them, take them for walks, whatver needs to be done. I've taken a leave of absence from this place though while I'm back in school and I miss it desperately!
  • not on a regular basis, but I'll sign up for various weekends here and there. most recently I pulled invasive species out of an urban woodland.
  • I volunteer for 2 of the agencies that I previously worked at on an as-needed basis...mostly fundraising and hotline coverage.

I quit the David Suzuki Foundation and being a board member at PEERS Vancouver when I started full-time work last year.

Also, me and some friends would throw a couple bucks in each, buy some food and cook monthly for the Downtown East Side mental health cases. We fed those who lost disability housing and now have addiction added to their barriers.

    Yes

You don't have to sign up and walk the 60 miles... or even sign up to crew. They always need voluenteers at the Opening and Closing ceremonies and at the Wellness Village.
Or... just go check it out in your town.

I did some voluenteer work with the cat and dog rescue services that held pet adoptions at the local PetSmart. The usual, cleaning cages, litter boxes, schlepping cases of donated food from here to there.
That is a heartbreaking task. Those kittens and puppies NEVER stop coming in. And you really discover the cruelty in humans who will abuse such small, helpless living things. Granted, you see some real loving and caring acts by others... but, there is never an end to the incoming homeless pets.

Sorry for the late answer, I never checked back on this thread. No, I don't even get credits for it.

I've never volunteered but I definitely would like to

I volunteer at my daughter's school up to 25 hours in various capacity. Such lunch duty, library, fundraising, bingo and coach to her basketball and softball teams. All at her small Catholic School which constantly needs funds.

Also in the summers on her swim team in what ever s needed.
