I am going to start marketing myself as a private tutor for Visual Arts, and Language Arts/Writing/English. Do any of you have tutors for your children? What are your recommendations?
I am going to advertise on Craigslist.

funny nonetheless. kind of a bad way to announce your tutoring and you make gramattical errors in the advertisement.

Just so you know, its not wrong to say, "I am going to advertise on Craigslist"
I am advertising a service, not myself. Therefore, no, I will not BE ADVERTISED.
But thanks for calling me out, that was worth your time, no doubt.

go for it!
i know you've said you have a visual arts degree, but i will tell you that most parents prefer someone with an art degree AND education degree/experience. i ALWAYS had student's parents ask if i gave private lkessons, etc...or to recommend a fellow art teacher. would be the same deal with LA/english. unless you have a degree in that, i'd forget that part entirely. for such subjects, again, parents want a degree/education exp....b/c tutors ARE pricey.
a lot of my former colleagues did private tutoring after-school, and thus the bulk of the students went to them. i never personally could be bothered, altho i did do a stint in a private after-school art school, and that's where the majority of students that i know of went for private or semi-private art lessons - local art & music schools geared toward individal students. i did know a couple of art teachers who had small studios at home and held private lessons and after-school/saturday classes, definitely supplemented their income, but they absolutely had art degrees/education credentials/experience.
i would suggest looking for ads for OTHER tutors, see what they list as their education/experience....maybe even call like you're a parent to find out prices, and then price yourself lower. w/o the experience of education credentials, i think that would be your best bet....price yourself lower to attract more students, and then in time you'll gain the experience and i know you plan to study to be a teacher, so it would all work out!
good luck!
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow
Thanks for the kind words! I do have a minor in Elem. Education, which isn't the same as a full out degree, but I did study it for a year and 1/2 on top of my art degree. I might not start this venture until I am a little into Graduate school because then I will be able to say, I am a graduate student for Elem. Education on top of it all.
