I work at a nonprofit as an admin assistant. A part of my job is answering, screening and routing calls to the staff. Well anyway I get this sales call today, I knew it was unsolicted. There is music blasting in the background and I couldn't hear them when they said the name of the company they were calling from. So he gets all snotty and repeats the name with an attitude. So I asked him why he was calling. So he said I don't understand these questions....

it's called

DOING MY JOB!

I friggin hung up on him, I can't believe I did that but I didn't feel like dealing with him.

Sorry...this is a stupid thread..I was just venting.

ha..I wish. Usually I'm better handling rude callers but something in his tone pissed me off...that kind of day I guess.

Something about it didn't see on the level. The guy sounded so unprofessional...music was blasting.

No, they aren't. I would never ever hang up on a client though. Believe me they can be rude and abusive but it's understandable because of what they are going through.

whoa...I do feel bad because it's their job but having an attitude isn't going to help. I was kind of thinking this person would do that...

I have to unfortunately do cold calling for my job. I generally try to be polite and profesional no matter what.

I try not to get mad at people if they hang up on me but if i'm not "profesionally persistant" i would lose my job for not trying hard enough. I've can't tell you how many times i've heard no, but i've been persistant and it has turned into a yes and business for my company.

I think you just have to be polite about it though. It did not sound like the guy who called you was profesional or polite.

Oh yeah, I definitely understand it's people's jobs and I can handle persistance if it's done in a polite way, I know that's part of the job. He was just a weirdo. I really beleive it wasn't on the level.

I think it was his tone really. I have had people be aggressive but still in a polite way..if that makes sense. But he just had this shitty attitude...

Sometimes I'll turn it around on a telemarketer...after he/she goes thru their schpeil, I'll say "I'll consider it if you'll buy a magazine subscription for my son's fund raiser." That usually throws them off guard, and it's kinda funny! :D

My sister-in-law hates telemarketers...when they ask if she is available, she'll say "I'm sorry, but (her name) just passed away, please don't call here again."

It kind of makes me think of that one seinfeld episode when he asked for the telemarketers home number...lol

that's pretty funny. I've worked as a telemarketer and it can be a pain when the people you call try to "outwit" you or something. it's always the same jokes and stuff. and some people get so unbelievably smug when they think they've really baffled you by being rude or something.

    pissed me off no end.

but that! that is really focking mean! two times I called someone and the person had died. one time it was really recent and the person who picked up the phone was the guys widow.

I mean, no offence to your sis-in-law, but as an ex-telemarketer, I see their side of it and that really sucks. :o

no, i don't think it's stupid. you're the gate keeper and if he wants to talk to someone then he needs to be more polite. i have to cover the front desk sometimes too, sometimes people don't realize what you have to put up with in that position.

ah, don't worry he is fucking stupid for thinking that your questions are irrelevant as an administrator you need to know who it is and where they are from
