CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Kevin Gregg from the Florida Marlins on Thursday, a move than means closer Kerry Wood won't return.

Wood, the 1998 NL Rookie of the Year who saved 34 games this year, had been the longest-tenured player on the Cubs. General manager Jim Hendry said Wood was deserving of a three- or four-year deal and the Cubs are not prepared to offer him one.

  • Wood is a guy who was on the cusp on being one of the greatest ever, I think, but those damn injuries ruined it. I always feel sorry for a guy when injuries tarnish what could have been a wonderful career, but then I think....hell, he's a fuckin' millionaire and it doesn't bother me as much.
Still sucks though because Wood could have been the next Rocket

Maybe if the cubs didn't destroy the arms of Woods and Prior by overpitching them in 2003 things would have been different for that team. Can you imagine what a healthy Wood and Prior would have become? Its tragic, they both had limitless potential!

I respect the cubs and hope they win soon, but that blunder has become the reason all other teams are so hesitant with young pitchers and overworking them early in their careers.

Well ... this is hopefully good news for my fantasy team, this means Carlos Marmol will be the closer ... or at least a right left closer split with Gregg ... :)

Wood pitched well for the Cubs last year in the closer role.
I wish him the best as he really is a good guy. After last year, he should fetch a decent salary as a closer.
