its political and is known for being the home of hippies and anarchists. The "leader" of the green anarchy movement resides a few blocks from my house. Their were riots here in 99.
we get alot of good speakers and good political events, but the activism leaves something to be desired, despite what I wrote in the first paragraph. protests arent happening daily or weekly. which is absurd and unforgiveable in a place known as berkeley north
the music scene is multi faceted. We dont get the big names here, but we do get alot of good smaller indie type bands who stop by.
I wish it was more like a portland or NY. Had stuff going on every night. A good concert every night, and a good protest every week. but that doesnt happen here.
Eugene is known for being left wing/liberal and hippieish. And a trip to the world reknowed Country fair or Saturday market where you can still let your freak flag fly.
but underneath that is a hidden racism. Eugene has so called "ex-files" or exit files of black leaders locally. In these files the leaders talk about why they chose to leave eugene. A large amount of them detail the hypocrisy of eugene and how we here talk about tolerance, but dont practice it.
I have in-laws there. I've been trying to get some information from them for some other folks, but nobody has responded.
I lived in the Portland area about ten years ago for six months and didn't like it, mostly because I'm from Seattle and Portland isn't Seattle. Portland feels really small to me and a little too quiet.
The Oregon beaches are beautiful.
There's a website I like to visit when I'm checking places out, maybe you'll find posters there a little more helpful. http://www.city-data.com/forum/oregon/
Walking can be a real trip

Seriously, what state (other than NJ) doesn't let you pump your own gas (for safety reasons). Answer: OR. Like people in 48 other states are blowing up all the time for gas pumping.

I live in Portland. It's got a good vibe to it. Everyone here is very liberal, urban sprawl is limited, & lots of public transportation. Also there is a very high concentration of pubs and microbreweries. People say that it's a smaller town, but really, how much of any town do you see in a whole day anyway? There is a lot to do and the people are generally pretty nice.
We have a great music and restaurant scene as well.
i don't live in OR, but i have a friend that lives up there. she took me to Bandon, OR and we had so much fun! they have a cranberry bog there, all kinds of fun shops, great restaurants. that's also were part of the Goonies was filmed. the coast is beautiful!
also, Crater Lake is amazing! there really aren't words to describe it. the water is a beautiful blue and so clear!
hope that helps

My uncle and cousins live in Portland. They moved there from SF and felt it was small at first too.
