I had mixed feelings about the movie. The scenery was beautiful.

The story was somewhat interesting, but somehow the overall form wasn't that effective.

Something about the scenes being back-and-forth in time didn't entirely work. Also, the music that wasn't Ed's was far weaker. I don't get why they didn't let him do the entire thing. ?? I can see why it didn't get a roaring response.

What did you think?

i would go off alone but it would not be my intention to die, just as it was not chris mccandleless's intention to do so.

tis cool... my head is still in NY thats all.

now about that film.... i managed to see it for the 6th time last week. i thought the flashbacks worked ok. i guess twas done that way cause otherwise we'd be watching mccandleless slowly die with no respite. as for the non-ed music being weak..which music are you talking about?
when tracy and alex sang angel from montgomery i just about passed out. tis one of my favourite songs.
the whole moose scene i could have done without. but then i wouldnt have seen the wolves. and i love wolves. now theres a dog for you not like those stupid chiahuahuas.
each time i saw the film, i managed to cry less. but the scene that always gets me is when his da comes out of the house stricken and sits down on the road and shows us he's not wearing socks.

and i always wonder, the part when the bear appears.. does alex smell of death?

I'm not thinking of their song. That seems fine.

I'm talking about some of the other background music. Incidental music that was not Ed's. It just sounded so average. To me the contrast made it sound worse...and so I wondered why it was left in...

I watched the movie last week after I read the book.
And I gotta admit, props to Sean Penn, but I wasn't really impressed with the whole thing.
I mean, it's a great adventure movie, the scenery is great, something just didn't fit right...

The book is a bit different (of course the movie can never be exactly like the book), but other than poor editing, imo and a few directors flaws (I'm no expert), I just wasn't really impressed and the movie was really really hyped) I too, got mixed feelings...

I read the book and a few articles online about the whole thing, after I saw the movie, and the book AND the movie totally don't tell the truth about the cause of death nor what he had with him (apparently, he did have a map)...
Some important facts are ignored, and that's what bugged me, both in the book and the movie...
I got into this issue, cause i find it very intriguing, how he did what he did, and what was in his head. But the theories on how he did it and how he lived, or was he mentally ill really bug me and i can't help but notice that the movie didn't really bring it well on screen.

Both Sean Penn and Krakauer maybe shoulda put more thought on real facts, not fictional story (in the movie, some things were definitely widened, while in the book theres only a few sentences on it: i.e the girl Tracy ...)
The editing and direction aren't my cup of tea. Some parts are well done, but jumping from one chapter to another and some surprising scenes like main charatcher staring at the camera at least once...that was shocking..but I guess, Penn had his own vision...
Maybe I'm just to critical on this and I expected more, and maybe I should watch it one more time before I write a novel about it :D But at least they shoulda put the real cause of his death...at least that shoulda been what is really is.
I remember the quote from the movie when he said something like: above all, love, family, comfort,...give me truth!

    Ok, I'm done now :)
    Gotta watch it again.

Well, I didn't read the book, became obsessed with the soundtrack and THEN watched the movie, so I guess I'm all ass backwards, but here ya go anyhow...

I enjoyed the film for what it was. At the beginning I really admired Chris for striking out on his own, being true to himself above all else. But about half way through I felt like he was doing it almost in SPITE of himself. Pushing people away and not really expreiencing the world, as he claimed to be doing. I'm someone who believes, above ALL, that we are on the earth to experience each other. That we are lead to certain people to learn things from them, so, that scene with Hal Holbrook (I think it's his name?) when Chris said that relationships don't have to be about people, or something like that, resonated with me as just untrue and unfair.

But then, when "Alex" is most alone, and hitting rock bottom he writes "Happiness is only real when shared." It all made sense. SO, that was the message I took. I bawled my eyes out, of course. It felt like in the end he almost felt defeated. LIke. "OH, I get it now. Oops....I die..." I felt a bit manipulated by it all, but so runs the course of films. But it made me think, and I appreciate any film that does that. So, all in all, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Dunno if it'll make my top ten, but it's one to own, if only for the soundtrack.
Underneath this smile lies everything...How I choose to feel, is how I AM!
