Have you ever noticed that

people will try to get you to fix their problems rather than addressing them directly?

I realized recently that I was asked to take on a job at work that would have cost me a lot of time, effort, etc., (I was asked because I'm good at this) but there would have been No more money, and No other work taken away!

I realized that it would have solved the problem for my boss but the person who is being PAID to do this job would just be relieved of it. I realized that people must do this all the time! Get someone else to solve the problem so they don't have to face the fact that the person who is supposed to do something doesn't!!

I decided to say "No." because I'm tired of picking up other people's work for NOTHING.

Has this ever happened to you?

I have experienced this at my job. This person at my organization took on a part of someone else's job. She is getting compensated for it monetarily but is dumping the work on others. I guess people would call that delegating but in this case it's not fair. In my opinion another person is needed or compensate the person she is giving it to.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.
  • I've been in positions where the person above me was supposed to do something and just *couldn't* do it so they've given it to me under the guise of giving me some big opportunity or something.

    Yeah...well...that's it...

work has been gradually shifted from a full-time person here to me (a part-time person) over the past few years because I do it well...but I'm not finding it to be any great gift...the old man is still getting paid for it although I am now doing it...and if I accept this latest thing I'll actually be doing more than him even though he gets paid twice as much.

It's no opportunity or compliment. :p

    UGH.

when I was in college I had this summer job where I basically was a admin person, working under this incredibly stupid admin person/secretary. it was a financial service office, so this secretary was supposed to do to certain financial tasks as well. I knew nothing about finance nor cared to, I was just working there-I usually filed! this secretary told me to do something for this client, I forget what it was. she barely explained it at all which led me to believe she had no idea how to do it herself. She had this big stupid grin on her face I remember. Anyway, I did my best, but I did it completely wrong. the client came in to complain. the secretary completely throws me over the coals. this is a grown woman, a mother to boot! she says to the client "GTD did it, meet with her" and would not add any other input. I had no idea what to tell this guy, I was like 19 at the time. Finally the boss comes out and basically said to the client "why are you meeting with my summer intern?" she had no idea the secretary had dumped it on me. I believe that it was actually ILLEGAL for me to have done this particular task. I think the secretary finally got it from the boss, but I'm not sure. she was basically like "why would GTD be doing this???"

Argh! :p It's too bad you couldn't have said you were doing the job because the secretary was a lazy-dumb-ham-head. :D

But, in my case, I actually have a lot more education than the other person... but he's been here for 25 years...he was hired back in the days when people didn't need doctorate degrees to get these jobs...

yeah I have been in those situations too. the last job I had before grad school was a huge mish-mash of people. some decently educated, some not even having gone to college. furthermore a lot of people who weren't as educated didn't even have necessary SKILLS, like I don't know, how to use a computer? but they were above me because they were just older and had been with the company forever. I was supposed to be the lowest on the totem pole but I was basically running everything short of the top manager.

we've got a big audit coming up next week for which I only received the training OVER THE PHONE on Monday. So we're told how to do this stuff... I have to go back over EVERYTHING I've done since I started here in December and change it all to match what they'll be looking for. Funny thing is, there is a list of everything that needs doing and who has to do it... my name is not beside ONE of them, not one... there's another guy who has 3 or 4 things beside his name... but between the two of us we have to pretty much do it all  which is about 50 seriously time consuming things! So they train us Monday and audit us less than two weeks after :o . The other guy doing a lot of the stuff wasn't even told about this til I showed him the email... cos I knew otherwise, he'd be told a day before the audit and then I'd HAVE to help him with all his stuff on top of all the stuff I'm doing for everyone else :( my head's gonna explode.

I don't care if nobody actually read any of that... it feels good to write it :)

    Thank you :)

It's all just a mess at the moment and I'm ending up having to be responsible for things I know nothing about and it's all making me look pretty bad. But, since my name isn't beside it, it may not look too bad in the long run. The past few weeks have been pretty bad here :(

    YES!

    all......the...........time.
people rather deflect and avoid. tis amazing really, and you see it manifest in the workplace a LOT. i have one colleague who has one of THE most piss-poor attitudes, is rude, barely does any work and yet EVERYone tiptoes around her, NEVEr goes to her unless they absolutely HAVE to....and will bring work to ANYone but her. yet, b/c she's been here sooooooo long, she is one of the best paid. ridiculous.

good for you for saying no.
sometimes it;s not even a choice.
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow
