iPod/MP3 Help!!!

First, a little background. My home computer died a while back (can't even get it to turn on) so I've been using my roommate's computer. Well, I wanted to put some new music on my iPod and didn't know it was going to erase MY music if I went onto her iTunes. Anyways...now I have an iPod full of crappy, horrible music.

I'm going to be traveling across the country in June (yes, for PJ) and desperately need to have my own music on my iPod!! So, here's my question: Since I don't have a working computer, what should I do? Should I just say "eff it" and get a new iPod? Wouldn't I just be in the same boat as far as music is concerned?? Do I get a non-apple mp3 player since I'll be using my roomie's computer to upload my music?? HELP!!!!

P.S. Did any of this make any sense whatsoever??

wait i'm confused....why do you want to buy a new one? is this one broken?

if it's putting your music onto your ipod, you have to first put your music on the computer....then sync with your ipod....

My current ipod works perfectly fine. I just don't have MY music on it because it's got all my roomie's music ... from her itunes. I don't know how to rectify that.

P.S. I'm sorry, I know this is totally confusing. I'm confused myself.

can your roomies comp have multiple users? if so, create one then start all over on that profile. if that makes sense.

I can't imagine that there are people who still don't know this. Shit like this scares me sometimes.

If you have the newest version of iTunes (7.0) you can create multiple libraries. To access this feature, one that many people don't even know about, just hold down the shift key while iTunes is opening. It will ask you which library you would like to open or if you would like to create a new one.

You're going to do 2 things:

    A) If you have iTunes 7* or later follow these instructions.

    1. Connect iPod to your roomies computer
    2. Open iTunes.
    3. Select iPod or iPhone in the Devices list.
    4. Click the Summary tab and select "Manually manage music and videos."
    5. Click Apply

    B) Upload your music to her computer. Transfer it to your ipod by highlighting the files and dragging them from My Music to your ipod.

Since you've changed the setting to "Manually manage music and videos",as long as she does not change it back, your music should no longer be deleted.

Or you can just create your own library like I said in the post above this one.

Combine the above with Biggestwave's idea. That is, make another itunes library on your friend's computer. Put your music in the new library. Then do all the above.

Your computer may be dead, but I bet the harddrive is still good. But it into your roomates computer as a slave drive and create your own library.
*does anyone else think its funny that you have a Master and a Slave drive...?*

I tried holding down the shift key and nothing came up. I'm guessing she doesn't have the 7.6 version then?

I am going to try this myself at home tonight. I have me, wife and daughters dueling ipods. Wife just got a new one and I mistakenly uploaded all of my 10 yo's tunes to it--Gwen Stefani, Sara Barelli, the entire Hairspray soundtrack--ay yai yai!

AmentsChick--maybe you need to upgrade to the newest version of Itunes. Its free and fast, althoguh they seem to come out with a new version every other week.

You don't have to be computer savvy to know how an iPod works. I figure that if a person owns one they should at least know how it works. It's really not that difficult to know what syncing up a device means. Maybe you should just stick with a CD Walkman. It's almost impossible to not know how that works.

except for that one dude's rude comment. Did not start my day off in a happy way.
I hope you're not talking about me because I'm not a 'dude' and I was being rude, just honest.

While you had iTunes open why didn't you just check to see what version it was or do you not know how to do that either? Just in case you don't; click on help in the menu bar and then click on about. If it's not the 7.6 version you can update it for free.

However you re-load your music onto whomever's computer, just be sure to back it up this time. (I once lost a hard drive with all my music and pictures on it and hadn't backed it up. Thankfully I was able to pull it off my iPod, but I don't think you have that option anymore.) If it were me though, I would first try the other poster's suggestion of checking whether you can still use your original hard drive - especially if you had a lot of music on it.
