Why can't large multi-million dollar companies do the simplist things?

Supposed to close on my mortgage refinance today. I'm currently with Citi Mortgage and refinancing with Countrywide. My prepayment penalty expired on monday, so I was free and clear to refinance to a lower rate with no penalties. Called Citi on Tuesday to get the payoff faxed to my mortgage company, they said no problem it will be faxed by midnight that same day. Wednesday morning rolls around....no fax. I called again, they say it will be faxed today.....I said that's what you told me yesterday....and now I'm closing tomorrow. I need to speak to a supervisor. Supervisor assured me that I would have it by Noon on my closing day (which was supposed to be today). Needless to say, Noon turned into 3pm....and I'm back on the phone trying to get the payoff faxed by 4:30 so I could close....and they give me the biggest runaround ever. The more hostile I got with them, the nicer they were. I talked a guy from India for about 45 minutes before he hung up on me while trying to transfer me to his supervisor. The next lady was also from India, she didn't hang up on me until after 50 minutes though. I'm pretty sure they were both robots judging by the way they spoke to me. I finally got a lady from Arizona on the phone who was fairly nice, but had no sense of urgency. Apparently nobody in the company can physically fax anything themselves...they have to order it to be faxed over the internet, and another department within the company faxes them out in the order they are received. Oh, and that department apparently doesn't have phones, because I asked to be transferred to them several times.
Anyway, My closing is bumped until I get that hard copy from them. But it just blows my mind that the simplest task is such an ordeal for such a large company. I had it set up to leave work early, my wife took the day off for nothing. How can such an inefficient workforce stand behind such a powerful company? I lose my faith/hope/trust in the human race a little more each day because of BS like this. You really can't rely on anyone but yourself anymore.
In closing, I don't really care if you read the whole thing, but I just needed to vent, and I already feel better.......could be the Maker's Mark helping me out though. Carry on.

They had extra money left over since they didn't buy a fax machine.
