SAN FRANCISCO -- Baseball superstar Barry Bonds was charged Thursday with perjury and obstruction of justice for allegedly lying when he said he did not use performance-enhancing drugs.

The indictment, unsealed Thursday by federal prosecutors in San Francisco, is the culmination of a four-year federal probe into whether he lied under oath to a grand jury investigating steroid use by elite athletes.

The indictment comes three months after the 43-year-old Bonds, one of the biggest names in professional sports, passed Hank Aaron to become baseball's career home run leader, his sport's most hallowed record. Bonds, who parted ways with the San Francisco Giants at the end of last season and has yet to sign with another team, also holds the game's single-season home run record of 73.

While Bonds was chasing Aaron amid the adulation of San Franciscans and the scorn of baseball fans almost everywhere else, due to his notoriously prickly personality and nagging steroid allegations, a grand jury quietly worked behind closed doors to put the finishing touches on the long-rumored indictment.

"I'm surprised," said John Burris, one of Bonds' attorneys, "but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. "I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before."

The indictment charges Bonds with lying when he said that he didn't knowingly take steroids given to him by his personal trainer Greg Anderson. He also denied taking steroids at anytime in 2001 when he was pursuing the single season home-run record.

"During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes," the indictment reads.

He is also charged with lying that Anderson never injected him with steroids.

"Greg wouldn't do that," Bonds testified in December 2003 when asked if Anderson ever gave him any drugs that needed to be injected. "He knows I'm against that stuff."

    Definitely.

Between 2000 and 2005, 99 percent of the 435,000 federal criminal defendants who were indicted and prosecuted nationwide were convicted.

So the fact that he was indicted by a federal grand jury is almost overwhelming proof that the government has enough evidence to prove his guilt.

The indictment states that during the investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests of anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing substances.

And even if he does fight this to the end, I can't picture any team signing him as a free agent right now and wanting to deal with this media circus.

I also believe that if he just would have retired without breaking the record for home runs, the government probably would have given up on this case.

  • In other news, I took a big shit today, followed by a 45 minute nap.
    "It's all happening"
  • just a shame this didn't happen a year or 2 ago. Speculation is that his buddy, greg Anderson, finally flipped on him, afetr a few years of being in and out of jail (mostly in) because he refused to testify against Barry Bonds. It's funny, everyone mocked Giambi when he sung like a canary about how he did steroids, where he got them, etc... at that same grand jury. Guaranteed he's having a good laugh today.
  • Oh wait...street drugs are ok, but steroid use in athletes is wrong?

  • yes they are, but that's not why he was indicted. Lying to a grand jury is wrong.

Oh I see a juicy conversation here. Please tell me why street drugs are ok but steroids are not.

  • well, maybe I should clarify. What I meant was: Steroids are wrong, and illegal. My comment was not in regard sto street drugs. They too, are bad. Mmmmmkay

i'm reasonably sure the steroids he used were not illegal at the time. he's being indicted for lying to a congressional committee, not steroid use.

here's the thing... Bonds lied to a Grand Jury about whether or not he KNEW they were steroids (as opposed to flaxseed oil). The supposed objective of the GJ (get BALCO) has long since been accomplished.

So..... Dubya has wasted $6m to get to the bottom of this. If this is truly a "Justice Department," where is the injustice? Meanwhile, if you want to talk to W, Dick, Condi, Alberto, etc. under oath it either won't happen or you'll get lies. And those smug a**holes sit in DC, grinning like cheshire cats.
