Green Eggs and Ham. It's a good one.

Failing that, I would check out the Grapes of Wrath if you haven't already.

I don't know what kind of books you like so here's a few suggestions:

    Duma Key by Stephen King
Manhunt: the 12 Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer by James Swanson
    The Ruins by Scott Smith
    "We're fixed good, lamp-wise."
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey

The four books are awesome.. Everything by Arthur C. Clark is good.He also wrote Rendezvous with Rama, which is a really great book too.

La Nuit Des Temps by Rene Barjavel is pretty good too.

What about The Alchimist! (: a classic !

anything by hunter s. thompson. what a fucking writer. my favorite of all time.
  • Go for a classic.

The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway.

You gotta love a book that is basically about a guy that got his meat shot up in World War I, that's in love with a nymphomaniac. All the while, the nympho falls in love with him as well and wants said meat in the worst way, but can't have it. They console themselves by travelling all over the place and getting plastered daily, while the nympho nails everything in sight and the guy with a bad crank drinks himself stupid with jealousy, longing and rage. It's an absolute masterpiece. Enjoy. As a side note, when I went to Paris and Madrid I tried to find as many of the bars that Hemingway talks about as I could. Quite a few are still in business.

  • I recommend 'The Book of Lost Things' by John Connelly as I've just finished reading it (I've also just finished Nikki Sixx's 'Heroin Diaries'... a surprisingly good read!). ... Lost things is a beautiful but kinda weird adult fairy tale complete with knights, a crooked man and even talking mythical creatures... a great read! :D
Reading Terry Pratchett's 'The Unadulterated Cat' at the moment but planning on reading David Bellavia's 'House to House - An epic memoir of war' next, swiftly followed by Russell Brand's 'My Bookywook'
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
  • because both of them have already been mentioned - Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's "Good Omens". I love to read that one over and over again :D
Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere" is a good read as well.
can't think of a lot more now, I also adore Poppy Z Brite's way of writing, but then I don't know if you like "that kinda stuff".
Kids! Bringing about Armageddon can be dangerous. Do not attempt it in your own home.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

It's maybe the best book I've ever read.
I have dogs instead of children... I'd rather ruin my carpet than my life.
  • Tortilla Curtain by TC Boyle.

One of my favorite books of all time, by one of my favorite authors. Don't see his books mentioned too much around here, but it is definitely worth reading!

This ones about an illegal immigrant husband and wife who manage to find themselves on a collision course with a white yuppie family in Southern California. Really a funny, touching book and definitely appropriate for our current situation with immigration.

good call. one of my all time fav novels.

    also second 'american gods.'

someone mentioned 'confederacy of dunces.' i have to say, i really wanted to like that book, but just found it annoying. maybe i need to re-read it. i just found it absurd, and not in the good way like joseph heller... in the slapstick way like adam sandler.

I read it last year and liked it, but not as much as most people seem to. I did find the main character to be annoying for the majority of the book.

I just finished Duma Key. Loads of fun and scary as hell if you're in the mood for that.

Or The Gum Thief by Douglas Coupland.

If you're looking for some light fiction with snappy dialogue, anything by Elmore Leonard is a great choice.

For something more substantial, try "The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money & Power" by Daniel Yergin. It's a very readable history of oil in the U.S. and the world.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Its the same author who wrote 'No Country for Old Men'. I came upon this by accident but the reviews were not your usual 'must read'. Only half way through but it is VERY powerful. It's aldo being made into a movie this year. Here's some reviews on a handy website

i've only read one elmore leonard novel. i tend more to the hard-boiled end of the spectrum. chandler, hammett. i was kinda disappointed by dennis lehane's first novel, but it's kinda in the same vein as leonard, only not as smooth.
