Ticketmaster ending "Florida-only" ticket sales

Residents of New York who want to fly to Tampa for this weekend's Giants-Buccaneers playoff game have found it difficult to purchase tickets from Ticketmaster. The Buccaneers wanted the tickets to go to their own local fans instead of a bunch of New Yorkers, so they asked the ticket company to limit sales to residents of Florida. However, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo stepped in ad contacted Ticketmaster on behalf of disenfranchised Giants fans.

Here is a statement from Cuomo's office:

“It has come to our attention that Ticketmaster had restricted sale of tickets for the upcoming New York Giants versus Tampa Bay Buccaneers football playoff game to be held in Florida this weekend. The Ticketmaster restriction allowed only Florida residents to purchase tickets.

We believe Ticketmasters’ restriction raises significant legal issues and was causing consumer frauds in schemes to circumvent the restriction. We contacted Ticketmaster about our concerns.

Ticketmaster has agreed to immediately eliminate the Florida residency restrictions for purchasing tickets which will now be open to New York and New Jersey residents, as well as other states’ residents.

Ticketmaster agreed to immediately change their website to allow such sales to take place.

We thank Ticketmaster for its cooperation.”

Sounds like the Giants are just getting a taste of their own medicine and don't like it or do you guys not remember 2001:

    Sorry, Philadelphia, Sold Out

    Published: January 3, 2001

After beating the Philadelphia Eagles twice during the regular season, the Giants stopped their fans. Eagles fans who had hoped to buy some of the 5,000 tickets the Giants put on sale today for the National Football Conference playoff game at Giants Stadium on Sunday ran into a roadblock when they called Ticketmaster. Fans from southern New Jersey and the Philadelphia area who got through when the sale started at noon were informed that the tickets were not available in those areas.

That was because the Giants changed the sale area for Ticketmaster after the Eagles beat Tampa Bay, 21-3, last Sunday to advance to the next round, the Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said. The Giants announced last Saturday that the tickets would be sold by Ticketmaster locations in the northeast. After the Eagles won, the northeast became central New Jersey, the New York metropolitan area and southern Connecticut. ''That's northeast enough,'' Hanlon said.

The tickets were sold out within five minutes.

Don't blame ticketmaster for this, it's the teams asking ticketmaster to sell tickets a certain way. Ticketmaster is in no means good, but in this case it was just doing what its client wanted it to do.

There is no corruption invloved....TM often limits out-of-state ticket sales in order to combat scalping.

TM acts on the request of the teams/promoters/bands when they limit sales by region.

they could possibly find an overriding reason to limit the tickets to florida residents only...who pays for the stadium? the taxpayers...right? living in florida is not something that is out of your control...living in new york is a choice you made...there are certain things that you gain by the very nature of where you live...in florida there is no income tax...does that mean that florida has to cease and desist that practice because it is not offered to other states? it could be argued...

Look up the toll free number for the TicketMaster Phone line and try getting tickets there. It's worth a try.

Exactly... People around here act as if Ticketmaster does these things on their own. Every type of restriction, auction, reselling, etc., is done at the request and approval of their clients (team, promoter and/or band, etc).

All the calls are routed to a couple call centers. You are dialing a local (or toll free) number, but they all end up in the same place. These restrictions are enforced by your card billing address.

That is only if you call the 1-800 #. IF you look up and call their local TM office with their local #, then you would get right to them. Call: (305) 358-5885
