Wow. I have been into Carlin really heavy for the past 2 years or so and I'm very sad to learn the news of his passing. He was only 71. Saw his last hbo special and he was still razor sharp. I'll miss his insight into this crazy world...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

    Sad news.

With his legions of hardcore fans and 50 years of work, he'll never be forgotten, that's for sure. He was slated to receive the Mark Twain Prize at the Kennedy Center Honors later this year. Too bad it will now be a posthumous award.

"George Carlin will be awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts said yesterday that Carlin will be honored for his 50-year career as a Grammy-winning stand-up comedian, writer, and actor. He will be the 11th recipient of the award. It will be presented Nov. 10 at a tribute performance televised by PBS. Kennedy Center chairman Stephen Schwarzman says Carlin makes people laugh but also makes them think. Carlin has released 22 solo albums and three best-selling books. Past recipients of the prize include Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Martin, and Neil Simon. (AP)"

rip george, you were the greatest! :(
    Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to the land
And no one crosses there alive
    And no one speaks
    And no one tries
And no one flies around the sun-echoes

RIP George. I got butterflies when I read this thread title. What a loss. He was still razor sharp and funny as hell...

He was just in my town this past winter, and I never went to see him...I remember telling my friends that I was an idiot, cause you never know how long he'll continue touring....he was getting up there....
But I never expected this. Fuck.
    :(
    You'll be missed.

George Carlin wrote my bible. I lived by most of this guys words and will continue to do so. Since I heard I've been in a pretty bad mood, and every time I watch another youtube clip, I start laughing. What a guy! RIP George.

And wherever you've gone, and wherever we might go, it don't seem fair, you seemed to like it here. Your light's reflected now, reflected from afar. We were but stones, your light made us stars...

I've felt incredibly sad all day. It's like I lost my favorite uncle. George Carlin was the guy that told us all about those nasty seven words that could never be uttered on Television. He was Rufus, the cool guy that dropped onto the Circle K parking lot in the phone booth of the future.

He made fun of religion, and actually made us stop and think about how crazy it all sounds (even the most devout, when really thinking about it, have to agree). He joked about environmentalists, and how the planet WANTED plastic because it gave us the tools to create it. He broke down the ten commandments into two simple ones:

    1. Thou shalt always be honest and faithful to the provider of thy nookie.
    2. Thou shalt try real hard not to kill anyone, unless of course, they pray to a different invisible man than the one you pray to.

Mr. Carlin gave me more laughs than any other comedian. I can't even remember the first time I heard his comedy albums or watched him on HBO. He's just always been there, a staple, a ration of reason in an ever increasing world of don't do this or don't do that. Thinking outside of the box was his real talent, and he infused those thoughts into something that could make us all laugh, sometimes even at ourselves.

You will be missed Mr. Carlin, and the world is just a bit darker without you. I'll break our pact and pray to the sun tonight. I'll pray that wherever you are will be bright, enlightening, and I hope you find us all entertaining on your heavenly CNN. If the rumor is true, they don't charge for cable there.

Goodbye Mr. Carlin. You are the stuff that made this world a better place.
