3 days in New York....

I will be in NY for 3 days in September. Flying in Sunday, leaving Tuesday night.

I have tickets to Yankees game on Monday night, but other than that, I would like to see some of the major sites.....Times Square, Statue of Liberty, MSG, Wall Street, possibly ground zero.

Can this be done in three days? How can I best accomplish this? Where should I stay in order to get this done? Which airport? Where should I NOT go? Rent a car?

Any help would be appreciated. I had a thread on this earlier but couldnt find it. At that point though, I was planning on staying a week, but now, sadly, it will just be three days.

firstly, do NOT rent a car, completely unnecessary! you can gwet ANYwhere in NYC quickly/easily with our excellent subway service. :)

and yes, i think you CAN most definitely see all the *major* sites in 3 days. it'll be a whirlwind, but doable! :p just be sure to get up early. ;) best bet for convenience is to stay IN manhattan, wherever......b/c then it's quick subway ride to anywhere. others may suggest staying in jersey, even queens...cheaper hotels and then either the PATH train in or the subway. however, imo, with only 3 days...i'd spurge on staying in manhattan and save yourself time.

airport, really doesn't matter. fly into JFK and take the LIRR airtrain into manhattan...or fly into newark and someone mentioned a shuttle, either works. i prefer JFK, but really, doesn't matter.

as where NOT to go...no where really. although, again, with only 3 days..i reccomend staying focused on manhattan, save any borough trips for another time.

of course, do pencil in dinner and/or drinks with a dreamer. :D

I figured you would reply first;) And was hoping so.

So, all of those places I mentioned, I can get to via train/sub, etc? As far as hotels in Manhattan, I'm hoping to priceline some good deals. What shoudl I expect to pay?

Taking train from the Bronx to Manhattan after the game is ok?

    :D
am i really that predictable? ;)

yes, definitely can go anywhere with the subway...

i really have no idea what you'd pay for a hotel. i live here. :) i don't stay in hotels here. priceline seems a good start. it REALLY does depend on how nice a place you want to stay, location, and the season....even what days of the week.

as far as from the bronx to manhattan after a game...no idea really. :o i shall leave that to good ole xavier mcdaniel to answer, he IS the resident NYC expert, hands-down...especially for any/all sport-related activity. :D

As Dream said, don't rent a car!

You'll be fine taking the train from Yankee stadium late at night. It will be packed with other people doing the same exact thing.

Times Square/MSG can be lumped into 1 day. Wall St/Statue of Liberty/Ground Zero can be another day. The subway will take you wherever you want to go, or you can walk (honestly, get a map and walk, it's easy to find your way around).

As far as flights, Newark and LGA are usually cheaper than JFK.

What about Long ISland ISP. Is that too far? it says its 52 miles. I doubt there would be public transportation form there to manhattan, correct?

From MacArthur airport, you would catch a shuttle bus to the Ronkonkoma train station, then take the train into Penn Station. Should take about an hour and 20 min and the train should cost approx $10-13 one way.

    It's a really tiny airport.

hey long time no see? Were you banned too? :D
Sure it can be done in 3 days

Doesn't really matter what airport you fly into, I don't think, but it will cost more to go into the city from Kennedy. LaGuardia is closer to the city.
    I wouldn't drive in Manhattan.
You can hit MSG and Times Square in the same day. MSG is on 34th and you could walk up to Times Square on 42nd.
You could take the train to easily check out anywhere else you want to go

Ground Zero, Wall St, Statue of Liberty-You can do that in one day but I'd get up early. I think you have to take a ferry to the Statue of Liberty, but where you take it from is all the way downtown and on the way back, the World Trade Center site is not far from there, (it's by Church and Vescey streets)

and Wall Street is just south of the site (take the 4 or 5 trains to Wall Street).

yes, you can get anywhere on a subway,
except the Statue of Liberty, I believe you have to take a ferry

hotels I'm not sure about. I'm guessing $200/night.

Men have nothing to worry about on the subways, they will be super crowded afte the game.

    Allie, I wasnt banned. :D

    Just busy lately!

Another question for all of you.

What if I was forced to drive? As in, taking my car. How much of a pain is that?

That is the best advice I can give about New York City. We ended up in a 4 star hotel, right near Times Square for $150/night. When we got there, I checked how much our room would have been regularly and it was over $300/night. You can't go wrong with this site for sure.

If I had my time back, I would have stayed closer to Greenwich Village. For no reason other than I enjoyed my the "feel" of it there. Very relaxed in comparison to the rest of the city.

What we did was pick an area for each day and stuck to it. It's easy to do all of the financial district, ground zero, chinatown, little italy, soho and greenwich village all in one day, so long as you don't mind walking and literally start at 8am and don't stop until you can barely walk anymore.

Then we did mid-town New York City on the second day.

And Upper New York/Central Park in the third day.

Obviously it would be WAY more ideal to spend WAY more time in each of these places, but with so little time, there isn't much choice.

Best part of doing it that quickly is you know exactly where you'd like to spend more time the next time you get to visit.

Don't get me wrong though, I still barely experienced anything in comparison of how much is there to see and do, but I got a bit of everything, I think.

Enjoy it! I can't wait to go back again!

Two options: pay hotel parking rates or overpriced parking garages
    Or
Park in NJ and take the PATH train into the city

How bad are the parking garages?

My girlfriend and I spent 3 days in NY last week. It was our first time there. You can do LOTS in 3 days! We booked our flight/hotel room through expedia and got a great deal. We flew into JFK and took a shuttle to our hotel(although I recommend taking a cab). And I think Laguardia has a train that runs through it, so you might want to fly there. I picked JFK because that's where the Beatles landed all those years ago. :D

Our hotel was 2 blocks from Times Square, in the theater district. In the 3 days we were there we went to ground zero, battery park, walked across brooklyn bridge, went up the Empire state building, walked up 5th avenue, went to the top of Rockefeller Center, walked around Times Square, went to the Late show with David Letterman, walked through Central Park, visited the UN building, went to Grand central station, and saw the Yankees/Red Sox at Yankee stadium! :)

I wouldn't recommend going to ground zero. We went there and there was nothing to see. It's just a big construction site right now. But maybe there will be something to see when you go there in September....

Have fun. I know we did, and we will be going back one day.....

edit: and just from walking around we saw so many things like The New York Times Building, trump tower, madison square garden, St. Patricks cathedral, the NYC public library, the apple building, the museum of modern art....it was a sensory overload. We were overwhelmed, but in a good way. :)

    I wouldn't drive in Manhattan.
    Parking is mind blowingly expensive.
