I am in the market for a new camera.

I have a Canon Powershot A150, which is 3.2 megapixels, 4Xzoom. Its not a bad camera but I am looking for something with a little more power, yet doesnt make me look like a tourist.

Especailly something I can bring in to PJ shows and tkae clear pictures in low light. (While they are playing low light.)

So, please share. I need to know what to get and would like some advice.

Thanks!!

A few months ago I got a PowerShot A550 (4X zoom and 7.1 megapixels) because it was on sale at Kmart for like $150 (I think) and I really like it. I don't really know anything about cameras, and literally only bought it because of the price, but we've been very happy with it.

I just bought an olympus FE-340 and it's really brilliant... for outdoor pics only though. It's 8mp and 5X zoom I think... so yep, excellent outdoors, not so good inside :(

My camera was stolen and I loved it :( It was a Fujifilm Finepix E900. I don't think they do that model anymore but my replacment will probably be the new model in the range.

I have a sony Cybershot and i'm happy with it. (I had another cybershot befroe and didn't hesitate when I had to buy a nzw one).
I think the quality of the pics is great. Good contrasts, etc. (in comparison with some pics i've seen taken by and HP camera, for example).
I have this one (but in black):

I have many cameras, but my favorites are my Nikon D40x and my Canon S5-IS. The D40x is a 10.2MP digital SLR that takes amazing stills and the S5-IS is 8MP and has 12x optical zoom and will do 4GB of video at a time, which is somewhere between 28 and 33 mins usually. The Canon is definitely more of an end user cam, with a lense that cannot be changed out, the Nikon can use 35mm lenses, but auto focus is not built into the cam, so you really wanna buy AF lenses for speed. Time from off to firing off a shot on the Nikon is less than one second using auto focus lenses. I'd be happy to post examples from both of these cams from our recent trip to the bay area. No pics of Ed, sorry.. I followed the rules. =/

    Peace

Sorry, edited to say that the Canon will take more than 4GB of vid on a card, but will stop at 4GB and have to be restarted to continue taping and this is assuming highest quality wide screen.. longer at lower quality settings, but still 4GB barrier. -Peace

i have a sony cybershot...i like it, though i have yet to figure out how to take decent pics at night or at shows?! i need to investigate a bit on that one.

i also have a holga camera by lomography, which has been fun to play around with. i haven't done much...or even developed a roll of film. but, there are so many great features that i'm excited to explore...color flash wheel, turning it into a 35mm camera...the possiblities are endless.
yes...i do feel like a human. i do not feel like a tree.

so you like your Nikon D40? I have been looking at them for some time now but I heard that the comparable canon is better.

There are two different models.. one is the D40 and one is the D40x.. the difference is that the D40 is 6.1MP and the D40x is 10.2MP.

I do love it very much.. and I have been a solid Canon user for years.. the same $ range of Canon is not nearly as fast.. Let me clarify.. Not nearly as fast to REVIEW your pics. Canon has a history (in my experience) of being brutally slow during review.

actually that's interesting, I have kind of noticed that with my powershot.

Here is a pic my boyfriend took in SF with the D40x. I downsized it 50 percent because it was just enormous for the web, still, it's enormous..

    that's a really cool photo!

yeah that's huge. and the quality is pretty damn good, especially getting all the detail on an all white cat.

This cam is absolutely the best hands down that I've tried to eliminate purple fringing in bright light. Beautiful cat, eh?

I bet you never get a blurry pic with that cam.. to have image stabilization on a 4x optical zoom is almost overkill.

The whole purpose behind IS is that when you are zoomed up it's harder to get a crisp picture.. IS is like having a gyroscope built into your cam to make up for the shake that is natural while holding a cam trying to get a far away shot up close. Does that make sense? That's why you see IS on high zoom cams.. It's necessary. As it becomes more affordable, it seems that adding IS to a lower zoom cam (i.e. 4x) will make next to impossible to get a blurry shot.

Lots of good suggestions for me to research.

Does anyone have a camera in particular that takes good dark/concert pics?

All the canon IS series I have used at concerts take good shots in the dark.. Sony used to make the best cams for dark situations, but I can't vouch for that anymore seeing as Sony's choice to use proprietary memory made me stray away from their products. The DSC S85 was a great cam for dark shots and very true and vibrant daylight shots as well. It's an old cam now, was 4MP.

What? He didn't get the memo??? ;)

Try some of your settings, such as sport settings, for shooting a moving target. Use program or manual modes and play with ISO and aperature settings.. eventually you'll settle your wiley pup.

Look at these.. they're not the best pics ever, but keep in mind they were taken from the 21st row at Grand Rapids '06 by me, a 5'4" girl (no flash of course) with a Canon S2 IS, 5MP 12x optical zoom cam.
