nightmares

a little bit ago I had this nightmare that someone (I don't even know who or what it was) had their hands around my neck and I was being choked. it seemed so real that it was terrifying. like so real that when I woke up and sat up in bed and I was shaking and crying and gasping for air. so i jumped up out of bed and ran down the hall to one of the spare rooms and grabbed one of my son's old baseball bats. I ran down the steps with the bat in my hand and i did glance around a little, saw that the doors were still locked and there really wasn't anyone else here. then I started laughing (even though i was still crying) as it occured to me that there probably wasn't anyone in the house that had been choking me and that it was all a nasty nightmare. I mean really was i gonna wack myself upside the head with the bat to get at whatever was choking me? :o

so now of course I can't go back to sleep, and i'm still shaking. I can't call any of my friends cause it's after 3:30 am as they would assume that it was an emergency and i needed a ride to the hospital or something. so if i called them to say that I had a horrible nightmare they'd choke me to death (for reals) ;)

I try to look at things (even the unpleasant things) as something to learn from. though I'm really not finding what i supposed to learn from this. i already knew that one of the meds that I've been on for the last six months causes vivid, intense dreams (and nightmares) but that doesn't make me feel any less like a scared little kid right now. :(

so what do ya'll do when you have a bad nightmare?

  • Shake and cry. ;)

I hate that too because it stays on the back of your mind all day. :) Try watching television? It's a quick and easy way to take your mind off it.

i have really vivid, sometimes extremely weird dreams every nite. every nite. most of the time i remember them pretty well the next day too, but unless i have one over & over, or i talk about it a bit with someone, it'll fade away.
I read somewhere that dreaming a lot is a bit like your minds way of taking a big dump - cleaning out the system so to speak.
    impatience is a gift ........
  • The craziest shit ever.. I was having the strangest dream/nightmare. I was on a small wooden raft int he middle of a dark lake. Fishing with a BB gun. Apparently there was a huge ass snake/monster or whatever the hell it was in the water.. and I tried tagging it with my ole 10-pump. Anyway, long story short, the thing jumps out of the water, lunges at me, and hits me in the stomach. Instantly I wake up and see my young cousin hitting me in the stomach.

This is absolutely true and I have no clue how that shit happens. It's like when you hear an alarm in your dream and your alarm clock is going off. Only this was physical.

To this day it still freaks me out a little.

EDIT: I've also had nightmares where I knew it was only a dream and tried waking myself up from it and couldn't. Freddy Kruger shit. Maybe this is why I can't sleep at night :/

this is not uncomman what so ever.
their is a term for this.
something about an old woman/witch type
spirit that sits on one's chest and throttles
    them while they sleep.
i read about it online from clicking on a link
    here in the pit actually.
anyone know what it is i am refering to?

i searched around, goggled my butt off and found it.
"Old hag syndrome" is what it is called.
    try wikipedia "old hag syndrome".
    i am going there now.
what i read before was better than this link here below.

first things first...tell me me about googling your butt off ;)

thank you. at least now i don't feel like such a freak. that is creepy that so many people experiance the same sort of thing (though this was more like old dude syndrome instead of old hag) cause it was like i kept trying to push it away and nothing would happen. :(

I get this all the time. How come you never get one of the other legendary nightmare creatures, one that is more pleasant, like a succubus that supposedly appears as a beautiful woman and forces intercourse on men? ;)

so why does that mean it's old dude syndrome rather than old hag syndrome?

are you implying old hag is weaker than old dude?

awesome :) nice concept for a collection of poetry definitely. Please give it an archaic, cool sounding name like "Of Succubi: A poetical work of Nyght Terror"

    or something :p

no, i'm not implying that old hag would be weaker than old dude at all. it's just that this seemed much more like a male presence is all

Sounds like a little astrotravelling? Whatever you can't say during the day, or if you're around someone who's "taking your voice" don't be around that person. Time to move out of that situation.

though i don't feel as though anyone around me is "taking my voice." I mean sure sometimes there's things that i can't say (that i would like to) to some people during the day but doesn't everyone feel that way from time to time?

I don't mean possession during your waking hours I mean someone who makes you feel so uncomfortable that you aren't willing to say what you feel, or even say the little things that make you you.

A lot of times dreams are a reflection of what we can't express during our waking hours. Sometimes it's as simple as you were watching an action movie right before you went to bed, and in your dreams there was a lot of action. Basically, a processing of the movie, residual effect.

Sometimes it's more involved. Instead of the action within a dream being what you saw, it is a reflection of what you felt. If you were in a situation where you were not able to speak what you need to say then a dream would be the time when you could finally speak, but at the same time it is a warning. If you don't speak it will be like a physical vice on your spirit expressing itself.

The first question to ask is, are you in a different situation over the past 6 months where you find over time that you don't feel you have much to add compared to how you viewed your thoughts previously?

well when you put it that way....holy shit, in the last six months my thoughts and feelings have evolved ALOT in comparison to the way I allowed myself to think and feel previously. though it's all pretty deeply personal and with no one to share it with that wants to hear it, I have no choice other than to stuff it :(

what she was saying i don't feel applies to me (i don't ever watch action movies...ha) except that the last question, I felt applied to me in the opposite sense in that in the last six months I feel like I have very much to add compared to how I viewed my thoughts previously.

I still don't get what astrotraveling is?
is that when the Jetson's dog Astro goes outside their condo and takes George for a run on that nifty space treadmill? :D

not that this has anything to do with nightmares but I've been trying to remind myself of this all day as not to think so much about that yucky nightmare last night.

do any of ya'll ever wake yourself up because you've been laughing in your sleep? I freaking looooove when that happens. i can actually hear myself laughing and feel my face breaking into a grin. :D
wouldn't it be wonderful to experience sleep laughing alot more often? :p
