LiveNation now selling their own tickets. No more Ticketmas

Someone posted this story on the other pit that Live Nation will now not allow TM to sell their event tickets, and Live Nation will sell themselves:

I think this is a good thing, especially considering that PJ who countered Ticketmaster in 1994 in front of Congress lost because a band does not have the grounds to go against TM, but the promoter does (because technically TM serves the promoters, not the band, or something like that). Now, with the promoter handling the ticket sales directly, hopefully this means PJ will negotiate much better flat fees... or even get the promoter to allow PJ to sell 100% of the venue thru the Ten Club with no fees, and sell only unsold tickets via LN's new ticket system!

    Not to my knowledge.

About 10 years or so ago there were lots of independent promoters handling concerts in their respective areas. And there were also competitors within those areas too. Then one company SFX bought a number of promoters up, beginning with Delsener/Slater in NYC area. They then took control of a number of big promoters. Then SFX and a number of the remaining promoters were bought up by Clear Channel, including some of their own rivals. Then Clear Channel was bought up by Live Nation. Now Live Nation is the big dog, running most of the concert acts in the USA. There's another big promoter out there, but Live Nation is the major one. I don't believe TM ever was involved, other than to sell tickets.

  • Ohhhh....that's right. It's Clear Channel who owns Live Nation, not Ticketmaster. Got the two confused.

But isn't it Ticketmaster who has exclusive contracts with most of the big venues so that they have to go through them? Maybe that's about to change.

Yeah - I don't know, but if venues don't deal with LIVE NATION, then they'll have very very little concerts to produce. I think that LN may have timed this out. It will be interesting. ...and Clear Channel is no longer involved. Live Nation is a separate company.

  • even if it just means the end of the "convenience charge" it'll be a win for everyone

  • I am skeptical that Live Nation selling tickets directly will be beneficial to any of us. Expect all the same fees that Ticketmaster charges. Someone has to pay for Live Nation's new ticketing infrastructure.

  • i love that there will be blocks of tix allocated to physical outlets! reminds me of the old days before john mccain invented the blackberry.
If nothing is everything, I'll have it all
  • I don't know if this will necessarily be a good thing. My impression is that Live Nation will be Ticketmaster under a different name. Live Nation is looking to turn just as much profit as TM. In fact, they're getting rid of the breakdown of the charges that you see when you buy TM tickets, so now you'll have no idea what amount is going towards what. They could up convenience fees and you'd never know. I'm not confident this change is a good one...

So each ticket outlet will have specific tickets assigned to them? Does that mean you could be one of the first people in line and get good seats and not have to go up against the whole system?

    FUCK TM!

Livenation has been selling tickets directly for years now, it just becomes the exclusive seller Friday at its venues, however their convenience fees are as bad as TM's, and in some cases I saw higher.
some have floated the possibility that competition will drive ticket prices and extraneous service charges down. Live Nation has no firm plans to lower either, according to Nathan Hubbard, CEO of Live Nation Ticketing

Plus I fiddled with the Livenation system during Pearl Jam's Mansfield onsales this year and its much slower than TM.

This is not a win for ticket buyers.

  • The only thing that will change is who gets your money. Some venues it will still be TM some others it will be Live Nation. check out the link for a list of LN venues http://promo.livenation.com/09Tickets/? ... &p=9791036

sfx, clear channel, live nation...all different arms of the same beast

what's up is the exclusive contract ticketmaster signed with sfx. if i recall correctly it was like a 7 year contract, maybe 10. since the contract was signed, live nation has spun off of sfx and has positioned itself to let ticketmaster go and handle the sales themselves.

the live nation/sfx/clear channel umbrella owns the radio stations, the promoters, the venues, and now the ticketing/promotion. viewed by many as an evil entity for sure, but it's a pretty damn good business model. their execution has left a little to be desired, though, imho

I worked for the promoter Delsener/Slater (as well as their competition Metropolitan Ent) when SFX bought them up, and have been keeping a loose eye on how everything has been progressing.

SFX was a radio conglomerate and wanted to get into the concert promotion biz, so they started by buying Delsener/Slater in NYC, and some other promoters. Then SFX got bought by Clear Channel Communications, another radio conglomerate but still called it SFX, then eventually calling it Clear Channel Entertainment. Then in 2005 they spun it off completely to become Live Nation, a separate company. Now Live Nation is becoming a record label, recently signing Madonna, U2, JayZ, Shakira and more.

I think Clear Channel spun off Live Nation because of the potential "monopoly" concern, but I think it will be interesting now that Live Nation not only is the biggest promoter, but will likely also become the biggest record label, all under one roof - though the labels which these artists are leaving may be "rented" by Live Nation for their marketing/distribution/promotion abilities, which Live Nation would simply outsource back to them. Really interesting stuff. Should make it relatively lucrative for an artist who wants to play ball. Curious what it'll do to the fans.

    exactly

it's not like a non profit organization took over

clear channel/live nation is no different than ticketmaster

people paid the fees in the past... so why would live nation change the fees?

i'm kind of suprised people are naive enough to think this is a good thing?

I'm just wondering why PJ can't offer all venue tickets directly to their fanclub members now that (I imagine) TM will not have an exclusive with the venues anymore. They should be able to negotiate easier with Live Nation. Dave Matthews Band offers their tickets thru their "Warehouse", so why can't PJ. C'mon Kelly Curtis - get workin' on this!
