In Victorian Britain, female sexuality was seen as a cause of insanity so to cure women of their unnatural desires some experienced a severe treatment - a clitoridectomy! Yes, that is what you think it is!

Women today should count themselves lucky :p

anywhoo, i just read this whilst preparing for an essay and i felt the need to share so that i'm not the only one having nightmares!

    yeah, this is what distresses me! My housemate just told me that one of the contestants on America's Next Top Model used to live in Somalia and she'd had it done to her!

    wasn't it supposed to cure 'female hysteria" which is actually just female orgasm?

    and yeah, it still happens...and other versions of this same surgery also happened in the US in the not -too -distant past.

    some young girls in poorer third world countries still get these for religious and cultural reasons.... very sad but true.
    Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

    ... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
