Ok, I will be up front by saying that I am not a big fan of the iPod, but after having 3 mp3 players go to shit on me...the latest being the Creavite Zen M and then the Creative Zen w...I am starting to think iPods are the way to go...so tell me your experiences with them...are they durable?...last longer than say, 1 year?...or should I stick with mp3 players and chalk up my experiences with them to bad luck?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Is it so wrong to think that love can keep us safe?

I needed to replace my IPOD within the first 7 months that I had it. It froze up and could not be repaired. Apple replaced it for $30 or $40. Since then the new one has been fine, but it's only been about 6 months. So I figure sometime next month I'll have to buy another. It's the Nano.

the newer ipods are durable. a couple generations ago I would have had a totally different answer (I went through *6* 4th gen 40 gig ipods). I've had my 5th gen 60 gig for almost 2 years and no problems knock on wood.
oh and I also have a shuffle which is awesome for the gym. so teeny!
they made you pay to replace it? I got all 5-6 replacements for free...oh well maybe I had the applecare thing.
It's something about their warranty. My gf bought me the warranty from the store she bought it from but they wouldn't honor it until the 1 year was up from Apple. So now I have a two year warranty if anything else happens. But if it does I'll probably just buy one with more memory.

we also have a bunch of non-apple products. an ipod boom box, a logitech speaker dock....and we *just* bought over the weekend the ihome under-counter radio/ipod player. we had a radio/cd player like that and loved it, even better to hook up with the ipod now.
Let's just breathe...

I bought my wife a 30GB video ipod for her birthday last March. Only one time did it freeze up and not for a long time. No other problems with it.
I bought myself a 160GB video ipod in November. I had been planning on buying the 80GB, but the 160GB came out while I was saving up and it was the same price I was planning to spend on the 80GB. I love it. Mine froze up for just a few minutes once, but no other problems.
Bottom line: I love it! I am also a fan of itunes and we have a small logitech (I think) docking station that sounds really good.
So I would recommend buying one.
The question about will they really hold as many songs as each says it will. In my experience you get about 2/3 but that's going to depend of the length of the songs. I could probably have more songs if I didn't have so many 9 minute long versions of Evenflow.
PJGarden is right. I think the number of songs the advertise is based on an average song being about 3 minutes.
On my 160GB I have 4000 or so songs and still have 131GB of space!!! I might have overbought!
my girl is on her third or fourth ipod now, though.
Just out of curiousity what don't you like about them? Is it feature related or just that everyone has one?
That being said, I have a 30g and am barely finding room on it (I have about 4500 songs). I want to upgrade but I don't know if I want to get another iPod, because while the hardware is good, iTunes is just lame.
I'm thinking about getting a Zune. Still unsure though.
I then bought a 5th Generation about 2 years ago. Last fall, I sold it to a buddy and, again, still works great.
Now I have the 16 GB touch. I absolutely love it. Coolest piece of technology ever. 8 GB was too small for me. I would like to have more than 16 GB just so I don't have to so actively manage my music. But whatever. The only draw back is the price relative to the amount of storage.
Go get yourself an iPod. You won't be disappointed.
I didn't like the original ipod for the first few generations but now they've been through so many generations they've really pepped them up a lot. I'd say it's definitely worth it.

Oh, that's true, I think my ipod has changed the names of some of the songs. I was listening to Audioslave the other day and it was the song "Set it Off" and when I looked at the ipod it said the name of the song was "Time".
Also, itunes is not super great at putting the right album cover with the actual album on the ipod. ZZ Top's Greatest Hits shows up as the picture for some of the Greatest Hits albums I have for some reason.
Ledbetterus, what problem do you have with itunes?
