I am divorcing the New York Mets.

I'm filing papers as we speak. I don't know who will get the dog, and frankly, I don't care.

I don't even care if they win this game tonight, after what Wagner just gave up. 8 huge innings by the kid, and Wags comes in and blows a 3-run lead in the ninth with two outs and two strikes. It is officially over.

i wouldve thought after last season divorce from the mets was inevitable. all that it would take would be just one incident, or one series of incidents of crapola play and it'd be all over red rover.

take comfort in knowing you are not the only mets fan who is considering this action. im sorry for your loss. :)

maybe you shouldn't divorce them ... try a trial separation for a bit, you just need a break (but don't you dae "see" anyone else on your break) ... watching every game in a 162 game season can be grueling ... take it from a Red Sox fan. Slow and steady ... don't let the highs get to high, don't let the lows get too low. Still ~100 games left!

Plus, divorce? Think about the kids. ;)

I won't ever leave the Dodgers. I am just in an abusive relationship, and the Dodgers stay out and fuck strangers every night and do heroin in the bathroom.

I have to admit that I am a long suffering fan of a sucky team (I wish I wasn't) but this whole "real fan and support them" thing is about 50 years too late. Today's athletes don't really give a fuck about the team or the fans. It's all about the paycheck. The days of Willie Mays playing stickball with the neighborhood kids are loooooooooong gone.

As a lifetime Yankee hater and new resident of the city (going on two years now) i want to like the Mets, but I just can't. There is not a likable guy on the team! They are dysfunctional as all get out and seem like they don't care. Beltran hardly even reacted to the walk off and there was only half the team to meet him at home plate. Just not likable.

As a Mets fan of 20+ years, I think ryan hit the nail on the head.

And still, I'm going to Shea Stadium for the first and only time when I travel to New York for the Pearl Jam shows.

Kinda sadistic, being a Mets fan is.

They all do. I've been a lifelong, non-waivering Mets fan. Supported them through the good and bad times...and there have been many more bad. I watch at least 140 Mets games per year and attend at least 10-20, depending on how things go. I've sat in a virtually empty Shea more times than I can count. And I'll tell you what - at least you know what you're getting...real fans and families taking in a casual game...and all there to cheer and support the Mets.

When the bandwagon fans come along, they cheer only for wins and prove their lack of fan loyalty with the following chant after a Mets victory: "Yan-kees suck! Yan-kees suck!" How about LET'S GO METS you morons?!?!

Anyway, when you've watched a team lose the way they have over the years, there's nothing painful about what's happening now...last night wasn't painful, it was somewhat comical and expected. It's only painful when the team PROVES that they're good enough and then falls short. Kenny Rogers in the '99 NLCS was painful, the '00 WS was painful, the '06 NLCS was painful. There was no pain when Glavine capped off the so-called implosion last season...it was comedy by then. The team has played sub .500 ball since last June...this isn't a surprise...they've proven nothing, therefore nothing hurts.

FRUSTRATING? Yes. Painful? Not even close.

EDIT - I understand that I'm a little overdedicated - I love baseball and watch a ton of non-Mets games also...and since I'm not a Yankees hater (that's a farce) I watch those games also...so I'm not saying you have to watch every game to be a "true" fan, but you can watch a few games per year and be more of a fan than some people who watch a lot, don't really support and look to jump ship at the first sign of real trouble.

comical?!? expected?!? not painful?!? not a real fan?!?

last night was not comical, and it was painful. it was like watching your favorite dog being raped by your spiked-dildo sporting grandma.

I've been a fan of this team ever since i was in diapers, and I will always be a fan of this team. BUT, the way they've been losing lately is sickening. There is no heart, no sweat, no passion. They all have there heads up their asses. It is this particular team I am divorcing. I will still watch, but emotionally, I'm not there ... just like them.

And what a surprise, as we speak Wagner is blowing a 4 run lead in the ninth inning. Another wasted gem by Santana.

I am a real fan, that's why I'm overly pissed off. All you half-hearted jackoffs can shove it.

Actually, you're right about last night - last night was painful when watching Pelf's gem go down the drain...though once that moment passed, what happened in extra innings became comical in the sense of Murphy's Law and the state of this team.

And today, watching a Santana gem slip away in the 8th was painful...Wagner's 9th was shocking...but still no pain. Maybe I'm just numb to this stuff now, I don't know.

In any case, I never called you out on not being a true fan...I was speaking in generalities.

Agreed - they look like they've lost before they've lost. Last night they still had several chances to win, but from the moment Wagner blew it, they all looked like they lost. That's been happening since last season.

This is the numbness I just mentioned...maybe now you'll start to see the comical perspective of it. The only difference is that I've never given up on them (i.e. divorce). Still, just to note, my original post was never about you.

Being serious, after the frustration and disappointment while it's happening, you don't see the comedy in it afterward? Not that you stop feeling frustrated and disappointed (or angry, in your case)...but also find it comical. Just curious...maybe that's just how I deal with it. It's certainly stressful as a fan.

nope. no comedy. it's sad. think about it. remember when Beltran struck out against the Cardinals in the '06 NLCS? When that happened, I wasn't pissed. I was optimistic for the future. I said to myself, "No big deal. This is just the first step in our march towards greatness." But in actuality, that is now looking like the pinnacle. This team is slipping away and pretty soon, they are going to have to be broken apart. If they miss the playoffs this year, say goodbye to Willie for starters. Then, who knows? Maybe they trade Reyes in an effort to completely overhaul the image of the team.

    anyways, no. no comedy.

Of course, the Beltran K was one of the items I referenced earlier as painful. I said the '06 NLCS bc I didn't want to single that moment out - it was more than one moment, but that was the most devastating for sure. I also felt the same way about looking forward...unfortunately, the Mets haven't looked like a championship team since the quick start in April-May last year. :( In the year since they stopped being great, I slowly stopped feeling the heartache of the moment a great team loses and started finding it funny that this is a "great team" only in hype. The greatness ended in May 2007. Every loss is frustrating to me...I watch sadly through each late-inning as they trudge along lifeless.

Who knows, like I said, maybe the comedy aspect is just how I deal with the sadness and frustration. Like a nervous smile, which I have. Now that I say that, maybe that's really what it is.

I agree with you. I've been through enough losing seasons with this team to realize when it's just amusing for them to try and find new ways to lose games.

I hate it when they lose. I shake my head, curse the players, swear I won't watch another game for a month, and generally find ways to explain that the rest of the division is crap, too, and that the Mets still have a chance. It's all part of being a fan. I just learned how to avoid dwelling on it somewhere in the midst of Strawberry going to the Dodgers, the Samuel/Dykstra trade, and the Vince Coleman & Bobby Bonilla Parade of Has-Beens.

The club has been far worse-off in their history than they are now. It just seems so bad now because we're forced to watch it unfold as if we don't know the outcome yet.
