"A few of the different people with the Rangers had mentioned it taking place and asked what I thought about it happening around this event," Leetch said later. "I said, 'Hey, it would be an honor for me to announce it if you want me to do it.' I wanted to do it."

Graves, stunned, welled up as Leetch walked over to embrace him. And then, the crowd roaring, the selfless Graves pointed back at Leetch and insisted that he resume his speech and reclaim the spotlight.

Leetch did so seamlessly. Though he came close to tears a couple of times, the ever-poised Leetch never lost it - that was left to Messier, the only other on-ice speaker beside master of ceremonies Sam Rosen.

In the end, scheduling conflicts having kept Bobby Orr, Derek Jeter and PEARL JAM'S EDDIE VEDDER from attending, the night was left solely to Rangers. And that made sense. Because being a Ranger is the thing about his career that Leetch always insists is most precious to him - the thing that was taken away from him on his 36th birthday, March 3, 2004, when he was crushed to learn he had been traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

for brian leetch night???? WTF? that would have been the icing on the cake

Leetch is a PJ fan, but that doesn't mean that he and Ed are friends

they may have invited Ed being that Leetch is a fan but I can't imagine Ed ever truly considered it.

He can't get into the habit of doing stuff like that, he would be bombarded with offers

I did notice they played alot of PJ songs during the warmup so maybe he was invited for whatever reason but just didn't show.

I have thoughts on the night in general which I'll leave later in the Blueshirts thread.

The broadcast of this on MSG Network was branded "Forever A Ranger."

    I really like that.

So if Eddie had been there, I guess his performace would have been broadcast. Suxx.
Things change. They wont change unless you make them. The best way to change something you don't like, is to change yourself. So if you feel like you have a piece of duct tape on your mouth and you can't escape, take it off, speak up, speak your mind, shout it out, let 'em hear ya! -EV

Trying to find stuff with Leetch and Pearl Jam I came across this interview with Chris Chelios from 2006, interesting read:

Q: You also are friends with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. Is he a big hockey fan?

A: Absolutely not. He went to his first game last year in Vancouver. He's watched a few games on television. He watched me win the Cup in Detroit in 2002 on TV. As we've become good friends, he has started to follow the game a little more, but no, he wasn't a hockey fan. He grew up in Chicago on the North Side and moved to San Diego as a teen. Funny thing is, we grew up surfing in the same place in San Diego and I actually knew Eddie before he was Eddie Vedder the "rock star." It's pretty crazy.

Q: So, you've been friends since you were teenagers?

A: Not exactly. Like 25 years ago, he moved to Seattle and I moved to Moose Jaw, and we never spoke again for more than 10 years. Then, one night, he is out with Dennis Rodman in Chicago at a restaurant, and we're staring at each other, and he says "I know you," and I said, "What's your name?" He says "Eddie," and I say "I think I know you from San Diego." He didn't know me as Chris Chelios the hockey player, and even at the restaurant, I didn't realize he was Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam. I am a Pearl Jam fan, but his hair was different and I never imagined Eddie Vedder being that small. He's probably about 5-foot-4. So, one of the security guards comes up and says, "That's Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam." I was like, "Jesus, now I remember, we worked at the gas station across the street from each other." It was really a crazy situation how we met after all those years of not talking.

    that's a cool story
    Don't it make you smile
  • my guess between leetch and eddie vedder would be the following: besides the fact that leetch happens to like the band, tim robbins is a ranger fan and has also done some performing with vedder so over the course of the years, robbins probably introduced leetch to vedder.

  • I just watched the replay of this because I forgot about it last night. MSG TV did a brutal editing job. I wish I remembered to Tivo it live. In the middle of someone speaking they would cut in to remind you that you were watching the Brian Leetch tribute. Then they would cut back to the same person speaking, but obviously cut major chunks out of it. At one point, Sam Rosen is speaking, then we get the "Brian Leetch: Forever a Ranger", then we cut back to Sam, surrounded by Rangers who weren't there a minute ago
