Iowa is one of those fly over states that no one really gives a shit about. So in order to make them feel better they get to be the first state to vote during the primaries, except they are so ass backwards in Iowa that they can't even get primaries right so they have a caucus. A caucus is basically a meeting of supporters of a political party. In each of these meetings, there are 4,000 meetings occuring today in Iowa 2,000 for the Dems and 2,000 for the Reps, they decide which candidate they will support. At the end of the night each meeting supports one candidate and which ever candidate gets the most support wins the state caucus.

I can say, as someone who lived in Iowa and caucus(ed) the last time around...it is retarded. I'm all for getting involved, but the whole process is stupid.
I must say the Repub. caucus process is much better then the Dem. caucus. The Repubs basically have a secret ballot, drop their vote in and go home. Winner takes all. The Dems is fuckin' retarded and it takes forever!!! It really pissed me off last time...
  • according to wikipedia this is what a caucus looks like

Proportional representation. I wish we could elect Congress that way. The winner-take-all system is retarded.

Worse still is that because Iowa is a big Corn subsidy state we have to deal with corn syrup and the joke that is ethanol because of the political power behind the subsidies and the caucus.
