If I was home I probably wouldn't watch. Juniors don't get a whole lot of TV time at my place.

Steve Mason

Team Canada coach Craig Hartsburg has decided to start Steve Mason in goal Friday against the United States in the semifinals of the world junior hockey championship (Friday at 1:30pm et/10:30am pt on TSN and TSN.ca).
Hartsburg said it would not be good for the team to keep flipping back and forth from one goalie to the other.
Mason started the quarterfinal and earned a 4-2 win over Finland, although both goals were of the questionable variety.
Finland's first goal came on a long wrist shot from just inside the blueline that seemed to surprise Mason. The second Finnish goal came from behind the net, as a centering pass bounced in off Mason as he was trying to recover from the original shot.
Mason got the start against Slovakia, perceived as a weaker team, and he also notched a shutout.
Bernier was back in goal for the third game against Sweden, and he was part of a breakdown that resulted in Canada's only loss thus far in the tournament.
Mason followed up by beating Denmark handily, and then got the call against Finland in the quarterfinal.
After beating Finland, Hartsburg would not tip his hand about his starting goalie for the semifinal, but TSN learned Thursday that Mason would start against the United States.
It's a decision that will be scrutinized by many, win or lose.
Before Hartsburg's decision was made public, TSN hockey analyst Pierre McGuire said that if he was in position to make the difficult choice, he would go back to Bernier.
"No disrespect to Steve Mason, but I would go with Jonathan Bernier." McGuire said. "The Americans are a puck possession team, they do not shoot the puck in and forecheck - they like to attack off the rush. Bernier is a very good goaltender when it comes to defending the rush."
McGuire also figured that Bernier would want to redeem himself.
"He was not happy with the way Canada lost to Sweden," McGuire explained, "so I think he would come in and give you a huge bounce-back performance. He's got way more international experience, especially on big ice, than Mason.
"So I'd go with Bernier, but I stress this: Mason has got them into the semifinals and deserves a lot of respect."
McGuire also said he thinks this Canadian team, which has struggled to score, has enough offensive potential to win gold - if 17-year olds John Tavares and Steven Stamkos continue to get more opportunities.
"If those young guys start to get engaged more and more, I think that will take some of the pressure off Claude Giroux, Kyle Turris and Brad Marchand," McGuire said. "Then they will play a little bit more loosely and score more. If the young guys get the right minutes, I believe they have enough offence to win gold."
McGuire said that Canada's toughest task in the semifinal will be shutting down the Americans' top line of Colin Wilson, James van Riemsdyk and Jordan Schroeder - who are all among the tournament scoring leaders.
McGuire said Canada could go with a physical five-man unit of Brandon Sutter, Stefan Legein, Colton Gillies, Karl Alzner and Drew Doughty to attack that American trio.
Sweden will play Russia in the other semifinal on Friday (10am et/7am pt on TSN and TSN.ca) after beating the Czechs in the quarters.
