The Patriots are cheaters?!? What are you going to tell me next? The ocean is full of water? Look, I'm a Steelers fan and I know my guys were juicing in the 1970s. I wasn't really around for any of those wins, but I've read the stories and, later, the obituaries of some of those guys. I guess cheating always goes on -- "If you're not cheating, you're not trying" -- but secretly videotaping walk-throughs and slide-line hand signals seems pretty slimy. Either way you look at it, whether you're a Pats fan or a fan of a team with a known history of performance-enhancing drug use, nobody is going to give up those Lombardi Trophies.

I don't see the Broncos giving back their 2 Super Bowl trophies when the League caught them and punished them for manipulating the salary cap their championship years.

Once the game is over, its over.

"There was confirmation that there has been taping since 2000, when Coach Belichick took over," Specter said.

That is also confirmation that everything and anything "accomplished" by Belichick/Brady and crew is a total sham. Congrats Pats fans, you wasted 8 years of your life rooting for a cheat.

I do take everything Specter says with a grain of salt. He's just another bitter Eagles fan. I mean he did co-author the single bullet theory.

The only problem with being upset that they were taping from 2000 on is that the league didn't enforce a rule banning it until 2006 when a memo was circulated around the league. So anything they did pre-2006 is moot. Sort of how baseball really can't suspend anyone who did steroids or hgh before they were technically banned.

As a Steelers and Eagles fan, yeah I'm upset this news came out. But what can you do about it. It was a rule that wasn't enforced that the Pats took advantage of.

I could be wrong, but I believe the NFL's bylaws and constitution banned taping long before the 2006 season and that the memo came after numerous complaints by other teams were issued about the Pats violating the bylaws.

I'm not sure when exactly it was written into the league's game operations manual, but from a couple places I read on the internet it was only added in during the offseason after Super Bowl 41. But the rule in itself is really poorly worded:

"No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game."

Technically, it never says sidelines. So I can see Belichick's lame attempt at saying he misinterpretted the rules and thought the sideline was not part of the field.

Now the league memo that came out prior in September 2006 said ""Video taping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."

But the league memo and what was actually written in the game manual differed.

I can't find anything else detailing any NFL rules about videotaping an opponent.

So if anyone finds anything please share.

CHEATERS 18-1 LOL WHAT A WASTE
  • This recent admission that the Patriots have been videotaping since 2000 irritates me in two ways:

    1. Why is a senator looking into this? Are you telling me that our country and the world is in such great shape that our public servants can now look to regulating the NFL?

    2. Goodell knew about it and didn't seem like he cared. If he knew, you can probably assume Tagliabue knew and didn't care. Basically, from where I'm sitting, the NFL doesn't see it as a big deal.

Nope, not a big deal at all. It's part of the game.
    from that article:
"I have nothing to hide," Goodell said.

Goodell also told Specter that that he doesn't regret destroying the Spygate tapes or the notes.

"I think it was the right thing to do," Goodell said.
