George Carlin, for president!

I've always been a fan of George Carlin. I've listened to just about every officially released piece of comedy he has done, and some that weren't official.

That being said.. some of the ideas he has and comments he makes are just so true in so many ways it makes me think that a guy like this is who we need running the country! (Ok maybe not "running the country", but hell, maybe an adviser, lol).

Some of my favorite quotes, but there are many, many more..
Once you leave the womb, conservatives don’t care about you until you reach military age. Then you’re just what they’re looking for. Conservatives want live babies so they can raise them to be dead soldiers.
By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth.
Have you ever wondered why Republicans are so interested in encouraging people to volunteer in their communities? It’s because volunteers work for no pay. Republicans have been trying to get people to work for no pay for a long time.
In America, anyone can become president. That’s the problem.
The only good thing ever to come out of religion was the music.
Thou shalt keep thy religion to thyself.
I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.
The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."
You know the good part about all those executions in Texas? Fewer Texans!
Abraham Lincoln once said, "If you are a racist, I will attack you with the North."

you're going to make me go download some carlin.... i haven't listened to him since high school
  • Haha yea, that's what got me posting. I went to get the new Dane Cook CD from iTunes and they had George Carlin stuff up, and since I already have a bunch of his stuff I started listening and thinking.

His ideas on capital punishment and the prison system are not only plausible but should become law! We don't need those "square" states anyway.. and how much fun would it be to watch public execution (catapult into a brick wall!) at half-time of the Super Bowl?

Lol that above statement is nonsense of course :D

A good SCTV skit had Rick Moranis playing Carlin and the classic line from that was: "Do you ever wonder why there is no green wine? You have red grapes and red wine, green grapes and white wine. Weird?" Man did he do a good job of Carlin.
You've changed your place in this world!

Pretty sure Carlin would be down with this, accompanied by a big fat fuck-you.

I think he was fed up from the get-go, tempo. Much of what fueled his beautiful (and missed) fire.

In fact, fuck it. Thanks to the glory of youtube (not to mention the Putin/cat reference in another thread), I'm gonna pull up his cats vs. dogs rant.

    Fucking genius he was.

Did anyone think he was getting more cynical towards the end? At times he was magic then other times just seemed fed up.

A few years ago my wife gave me his box set "All My Stuff". It's not really all his stuff but I also have his last DVD. "It'd Bad For Ya" which basically completes the set. I take time about once a year to run through all of the shows and I always get the same impression, that toward the end he became more cynical and angry (yet he was still very funny as well). But can you blame the man? He spent his whole life trying to entertain (his first priority at which he was quite successful) but at the same time was trying to get people to think critically and more intelligently and at this he was bound to fail, at least to some degree. At the same time, it's worth noting that in his later interviews it seems to me he came across as being a fairly contented human being. I think he was just giving the dying engine all the gas he could at the end.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
    Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

    -Dylan Thomas
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

Some do / can / need to go gently...and those of us behind, while being thankful for what was hopefully a soft transition from this life to...?

    We rage on their behalf.

(then try to let it go)

It was such a joy to catch up on Carlin earlier today. Doesn't matter if I've heard or seen some of his brilliance multiple times, just does my soul good.

Lewis Black is the closest we have to a living George Carlin. Love how he, like me, is progressive yet hates both the democrat and republican parties.

In a lot of ways yes.
He became hard to listen to after awhile.
It felt like you could hear his passion dissipate every time he took the stage and I think he became bitter at being the very thing that he did not like - A successful person ranting against the machine.
If you hate something don't you do it too.

Interesting. I didn't get that from him - the hard to listen to part. Or the lack of vitriol.

George just got more and more "full of piss and vinegar". When you get up in the years, that ain't a bad thing! I don't think he hated what he did at all. In fact, quite the opposite. His last video was "It's Bad For Ya" but what he was doing was "Good For Ya". My Pop's like that- stubborn and a bit cranky. He's also turning 95 at the end of the month.

Me, I'm just getting warmed up!

I liked his interviews and other endeavors towards the end. When someone asked him to act or stand in for a bit he did it. His interviews were top notch!

Can we show a little more love for Mr.Hicks and add him to the ballot here Mr.Brian?!?
