a few select quotes:

"CBS's broadcast of a nine-sixteenths of one second glimpse of a bare female breast was actionably indecent"

"The FCC said at the time that the "F-word" in any context "inherently has a sexual connotation" and can trigger enforcement."

american children see a female nipple for 9/16th of ONE second and the entire country goes completely apeshit. the f-word might make people think about sex, god forbid. meanwhile, one hour before these programs, you could watch people being tortured and dissected on csi or law & order. anyone else think this country is completely fucked?

    yeah, but for opposite reasons.

I think this just proves that the system (despite a good "show" by the FCC) is really in the back pocket of big corporations.

I don't really want to get in to the obvious issue of the hypocricy present by fining nipples, but being fine with violence.

The broadcast clearly and (i don't care what you say about "malfunction" my ass) deliberately violated the rules,

and they should have been fined.

If you want to debate the sanity of the conflicting message sent out by banning nipples and approving missles, fine.

    But the rule stands,
and a deliberate violation was made.

    Fuck their attorney fees.
You have any idea how much FREE PUBLICITY they got out of that fucking stunt?

    shameless.

I was talking about this last night with my wife.

Not being able to show a human breast... but you cut off that breast and lay it on the streets in Iraq or some other conflict area next to a rotting corpse... and it would be okay.

    you know this how?

even assuming that, if it's a stupid rule, it should be broken. civil disobedience.

There's no problem with showing a human breast in general - it's only when it's a female breast that they decide it's indecent.

The nipple has to be dead first...killed by American made ammunition.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions

  • In florida, it really is a "human" nipple. Apparently the wwe (wrestling) held some kind event here so there were posters on buildings and billboards and such showing their headliners. But before they did this they had to airbrush every male nipple that could be seen on every poster.

But my understanding is the rules for indency are not at all clear. There is no list of rules on what you can and can't do on tv, everything is complaint based. So if no one filed any complaints then there would have been no fines. How is that fair when fines are not based on a set of rules, but on the tolerance of the people watching?

Some gender equality has finally been achieved! ;)

and really, what would the world come to if we could see nipples everywhere? actually, we can...just not on free broadcast TV.

    btw - we're in bad shape, you bet...but call me a crazy optimist, a dreamer...but i don't think we're completely fucked. i still see hope. :)

    Semi, sort of related:

My brother and I were watching an old episode of Trailer Park Boys (if you don't know it, run now to whatever streaming site you choose and check it out. Bloody hilarious) on network TV here in Canada. There is A LOT of swearing in the show, so when they show episodes during the day it's bleeped out. Fine, whatever, gotta draw the line somewhere. But we were watching it at 9PM, fuck was bleeped out, but then they missed it when it was written and spraypainted.... :) So if a child can read, they were just "corrupted" or whatever they think swearing will do to children...

I know I get nightmares from the war-related imagery and stories, but not so much from sex or swearing.... :)

Wow. I don't even know what to say to that. Unfuckingbelievable!

Then bra sales wouldn't be a $billion industry. They'd never allow that to happen!

    well padded bras, sure. ;)
there are varying degrees of 'reveal' with all else. :D
and i'll shut up about that now.

bottomline, accidents happen and people need to relax about it. if one wants to argue it was purposeful, that's another topic...but if deemed an accident, this seems the right outcome at the end of the day.

In ontario, women can legally bare their breasts in public, but typically the only ones you'll see are ones you'd rather not.

i believe the same is true in NY...or at least NYC? i remember it being fought for many years ago and i believe it was won. however, i have yet to see ANY woman do so, anywhere. and hey, that's the risk you take with such laws. ;)

Well, i could agree that a subjective rule is silly.
But you really think the people who planned this did not EXPECT to get complaints out the yingyang by showing a tit during THE SUPER BOWL !?!?!
