I mean it seems great to me but man it can't be good for our jobs.

Some "benefit", true, but only in relation to ALL americans.

The reality is a weakening dollar is bad for EVERYONE at the end of the day.

It doesn't take a lot of "rational thought" to understand that fundamental point.

Yeah, it makes our exports cheaper, but that is hardly the answer to either balancing our trade defecit (simply won't do enough good) or to truly stable fiscal policy.

I think (as you well know, jlew) we are in for a world of shit in the coming years.

Once our dollar takes enough of a bath, all the billions that we've doled out across the world ... nearly every one of those "conveinently cheap" dollars that we've "duped" the world with ... trading our declining dollar for their goods ... every one of those dollars will see its way back in to our poor little hands ...

the dollar declines ... the "foreign investors" dump their dollars back into our market ... trading them for whatever they can ... and soaking us with more than our market can bare ... then the dollar will take its final dive ...

    :(

If I opened it now would you not understand?

It is definitely not good for Canada to have the high dollar since we sell somewhere around 90% of the goods we produce to the States. The less buying power that Americans have, the less stuff we sell, the more Canadian jobs are lost. With that said, there are other markets to keep us going while the States struggles with this sub-prime loan fiasco (the lenders deserve the shit that is coming to them for that little trend), but in the end, it is better for everyone in North America to have Canada exporting primarily to the States.

We also import a lot of goods from the US, so at least we are starting to see a little bit of a price drop on some goods...

And our economy isn't really slowing down for the moment. There's a labour shortage in construction jobs in many provinces...

But our dollar isn't necessarily strong...its the US dollar that's weak. The TSE is still gaining...so I think we Canadians are OK for now...like you said, we are building trading markets in other countries (India, China) and that is what's helping us at the moment...

With all the natural resources that we have, it amazes me that the US dollar even sniffs ours in the long run. Then again when you bend over backwards (see soft wood lumber) it dosen't really amaze me that much.
