  • Did you get your Dion and Harper mock vote free postage handouts to turn in the mail a couple weeks ago?

I was going to write something obscene on them...

I would go crazy if I had to sit through a 2+ year federal election campaign. I mean with the one month campaign you don't really have time to talk about anything other than the issues. Shit like what someone did in college, or what their minister says or what they wear to becomes irrelevant because the news shows only have 1 month worth of time to fill.

I kept thinking to myself...what's to stop someone from photocopying up like 5,000 of these things and dropping them in various mailboxes?

I definitely like the idea of more feedback opportunities, I just wish it was a little more thought out.

The naivety is part of the charm for me in a sense though. Still have some good intentioned honest minded people in the system. Thank god our elections aren't like the US horse and pony show....omg. I'm not sure I could stomach it.

I am curious do you think anyone actually does care about? I mean if they didn't report on it do you think anyone would be wondering. I think a lot of the problem is the fact that in the US there is a 2 year campaign, and then news networks like CNN are running 24 hours a day and they have to talk about the election all the time, so rather than talking about the person's platform non-stop for 2 years, they have to find new stuff to talk about like lapel pins, or who's wife is more stylish.

i am not looking forward to this election - the way things are these days, the Conservatives are fairly solid to be re-elected - i'm just hoping it is not by a majority ...

i think that people do care and the reason being TV is based on ratings. if the ratings suck then the TV show gest cancelled. it happens all the time, just look at that old CNN show Crossfire, ratinsg went down it got cancelled. we live in a world where people have to know everything about everyone, look at the gossip shows, there are more now than ever before.

considering that the Liberals have no real platform and no real leader and they are still almost tied to the cons gives me hope. there is no way that the con. will ever get a majority just becuase Ontario remembers Mike Harris and how he fucked us over.

I still have an igloo, but it's one of the new 2 chamber ones. It holds a lot more seal meat.

ontarians voted for harper (ie. harris v. 2.0) and they will continute to vote for him ... the question mark is quebec where the Cons have made progress ...

I think you're right that it is based on ratings, but it is also the fact that for news stations it is better to talk about something new than something old. I mean if you are CNN you pretty much have to talk about the candidates every day, but if you talk about the same thing everyday for 2 years no one is going to care (especially if it is something about their political platform). Then I think there is a snowball effect, where if say CNN breaks a story about Obama’s barber, then Fox has to cover it so they try and do it bigger and better and by the time everyone is covering it, it has grown into an actual story and people think it must be important. I see your point about the gossip shows, but using those shows as an example look how fast the scandal of the week changes. No one cares about the scandals from last month because those shows have to keep hitting their viewers with something new.

people from ontario did vote for harper but that was a punishment vote to the liberals for the fuck up. it will not be the same way this time around. i think Dion has a better spot in Quebec as they tend to be more liberal in their views concerning issues liek climate control and other social services.

if John Tory didn't bring up religion in schools - he could very well be premier here ...

this is the thing in canada - there is only one Right Wing party ... the people that vote conservative will ALWAYS vote that way ... ie Alberta will always vote conservative ...

there are maybe only a few ridings that are swing ridings ... and i think people in quebec do not like dion ...

you wrote the answer in your post when you said that "if you talk about the same thing everyday for 2 years no one is going to care (especially if it is something about their political platform)" i understand that people might not be happy with what they are getting from say CNN or other news agencies but then they are going to have to realize that if they want 24 hour news coverage than they must be prepared for getting stories that don't matter. i never heard one person complain that they don't want 24 hour news coverage.

concerning John Tory, your right about religion in schools but lets face it religion has always been a main stay of conservative governments him saying that just reminded peopel that he is a conservative.

some may say that there are 2 right wing parties (liberals) i don't have a problem that alberta will always vote conservative as long as teh rest of teh provices don't. i think teh east coast is gone for harper since he screwed them, i think ontario will vote liberal agian as they might be afraid of a conservative government.

there are only a few swing type ridings in Ontario - the 905 will always vote conservative for the most part ... ultimately tho - it will depend on Quebec ... in any case - i think the cons have a good base to work with ...

Really you have never heard any complaints that the 24 hour news networks are like 1 hour of news and 23 hours worth of filler (usually because there is not enough fresh news to keep them running)? I have heard that complaint tons of times.

sorry maybe i didn't make it clear, i think peopel have to realize that if they want 24 hour news then they have to settle for alot of crap. some people want it all, i want 24 hoiur news that is alwasy new and not filler, that is not possible. people have to decide do we want stories abotu what matters but only for say 5 hours a day or do we want 24 hour news reports.
