I got home yesterday and started to watch CNN report abotu being Black in america. i thought it was a thoughtful conversation but i had an issue with one part of it. there was a econimist there talking abotu one program that he was running and it was about giving money to kids based on their grades. i thought that this was not the right thing to do but it seemed that it was successful. what do you all think? is it a good short term plan? a good long term goal? what are teh downsides? what are teh upsides?

    Downside: Kids will cheat

    Upside: Kids will be smarter

I am of the opinion that programs like this only add to the divisiveness in this country. When will people just start acknowledging we're all individuals (and we're all of mixed race and getting more mixed all the time).
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

well what the person said yesterday is that middle class and uper class students to get paid for good grades to i.e. allowances, cars at graduation. we might say we are all indivduals but in reality there is aproblem with black kids dropping otu of school for whatever reason. there has to be aplan to help those kids. i know here in Toronto, we are now having black schools that cater more towards the young black kids.

I'm not sure that I like the idea... Granted, any motivation to help kids learn can't be all that bad, but I just don't like the idea of the school paying kids money for good grades.

Maybe there are better incentives that can incorporate learning... If we are talking about 4th grade kids, maybe that is a trip to a science museum or something as simple as rewarding kids with a movie day or whatever...

    I don't know...

  • this is a horrible idea. People worship money and possessions way to much in this day and age. Giving kids money at a young age, where competition will develop between them, will make this problem worse. Its bad, but not so bad when a parent gives a kid money for doing well, but for an institution to do it. Like I said, horrible idea

i understandthat people worship money but in a community that does not have alto of money this would not be to buy a swimming pool. i t could b eput to good use say in a college fund.
