republican PJ fans

I was thinking about how much republicans disgust me and then it got me wondering if members of PJ would like republican fans to stop being fans. Eddie had some comments during his solo tour that may indicate this.

If I was in a band that was financially stable I certainly would like to pick and choose my fans. How about you?

I guess I'm wondering if they will be even more political at shows and really alienate and make fun of republicans.

I was pretty conservative in my high school days, but that never stopped me from connecting with the band and their music.. Its just ideas on how the world should be run. Conservatives and liberals all have the same basic needs, just different ways to get them.

Thats said, Pearl Jam had very little influence on me becoming a tree hugging hippy. ;)

I went from understanding how the world worked as conservative to seeing how I really want the world to work as a liberal.

Maybe you should stop trying to do that. It is embarrasing.

EDIT: BTW, I'm not a Republican. I tend to disagree w/ Ed on about half of his politics. It is possible to appreciate the music without worshiping the artist.

i am almost as liberal as it gets but if a band tried to alienate republican fans it would alienate me. hell if a person dislikes someone for political affiliations i'd be upset. there are republicans too who also need pj to help them in their lives. maybe even more so. i hope the band doesnt think that way.

    i feel the same way.

to add on- we all want the best for our country. we just have different ways of getting to that point.

so we shouldnt be alienated for our beliefs.

why should it matter? I disagree with some of ltheir political views but I also support a lot of their causes. In fact, my guess is the ones I support far outnumber the ones I disagree with. Just glance through the activism section of their website... A lot of them aren't even partisian (homelessness, literacy, disease research, abuse, the arts, human rights issues). Perhaps you should talk with republicans and see their views on things besides 2 or 3 issues, you may learn that you have more in common with them than you think.

One of the people Vedder liked the most was a staunch Republican.
Even wrote a song about his death.
    That person was Johnny Ramone.
I don't think the band wishes to alienate any of their fans bec. of political beliefs.
I do not agree with much of what Vedder says politically, but the music is awesome.

Perfect post. Everyone should do this. On both sides. Or all sides.

I just don't think you can paint the democrats vs. republicans with such a broad brush. I'm a left-leaning democrat, but I think there are just more gray areas and areas of commonality than we realize. There are plenty of respectable and decent people that are republicans. If Ed or the band says something they truly feel about the world today, and it irritates someone because they disagree, fine, but I can't see Ed or Pearl Jam purposely setting out to alienate a specific group of people.

That's a silly idea. I am a very liberal democrat, but I have had the fortune of encountering several smart, compassionate, thoughtful Republicans with whom I have enjoyed exchanging views. What a loss it would be if all discussion stopped at "I'm a Republican" or "I'm a Democrat". The loss of politics, really.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

I guess I see republicans as people who care more about their moral issues than doing what is best for the people.

    1. Anti gay marriage- this one really gets me. The GOP always talk about small government and letting people take care of themselves. Yet this is a big issue? Who the fuck cares if your gay neighbor wants to marry his buddy. How does that harm anyone?

    2. Anti universal health care- Fucking ridiculous. As an American who has been living in Canada for a few years, I can tell you it's time to wake the fuck up. The U.S. is quickly becoming a joke around the world. I play hockey here and I usually get injured at least once a year. The care here is no worse than the United States. But the drug and insurance companies have you fooled. They have spent a lot of money in attempts to fool you. But why wouldn't they? It's a billion dollar business.

I was going to go on and on, but you get the point. And I don't want to waste my energy on the GOP. I realize not every person that votes republican is a bad person. But it's the platform of the party that disgusts me. And how anyone could want more guns, not be pro-choice, want more war, want less liberties, not give a shit about the environment, not want good health care for all citizens, and not want to spend more on education and infrastructure astounds me.

I agree. this should be a non-issue across the board. should be a state issue if anything.

What if you're more conservative than republican? I have little in common with the modern day republican party, but quite a few common views with Libertarians. Does Ed say "Fuck 'em" to them too?

Let me simply echo the comments that people who are judgmental are the ones who disgust me.

I have two overarching political views that rule my beliefs:

    1. Blind following of all things Republican or Democrat without a mind of your own is ridiculous.

    2. THERE ARE NO WRONG POLITICAL VIEWS, JUST DIFFERING OPINIONS.
All the rusted signs, we ignore throughout our lives, choosing the shiny ones instead...

    Lets see.

    1. I don't care if gay people get married, they can experience divorce too. That could even be a brand new reality show on Bravo.

    2. I am pro-choice.

    3. I am for a worker's right to organize.

    4. I'm anti war for things like Iraq but I am very much so for going into Afghanistan.

    5. I'm for torturing members of Al-Qaeda if it saves the lives of innocent people.

    6. I like my guns. I don't have a gun rack or a Confederate flag. But if someone broke into my house they are going to have serious issues.

    7. I'm for the deportation and complete removal of illegal aliens. They suck society dry.

    8. I'm for extreme welfare reform. Recipients should have to take and pass a drug test and in most cases benefits should end after a set period of time. There are jobs out there, quit being lazy. If the illegals were kicked out there would be many more.

    9. I'm for making the dollar mean something.

    10. I am VERY anti-WalMart. In fact I generally try to avoid corporations and shop at Mom and Pop places. I don't care that is costs a little more.

    11. I pay an insane amount of taxes and I am in the next to highest bracket. I am tired of people demanding free hand outs. Get an education and a job.

I'm voting for Ron Paul. If he is not on there I think I might vote for Mickey Mouse or maybe McCain. Hillary is the devil and Obama is worthless. This country cannot afford four more of Bush but Obama would be as bad in other ways.

I like the music. I don't like the rantings in between songs, it gets old. I'm also not enough of a homer to think every PJ song is good. Every band has a few blunders.
  • I've been a fan of this band for so long that I don't think there's much PJ could do to "alienate" me politically at this point. Ed is a big, bleeding heart, hippy-dippy, pseudo-Marxist liberal but he's also well-spoken, intelligent and interesting. I'm not shocked by anything he says politically anymore. I don't even have a big problem with the more "political songs" other than sh*t like "Bushleaguer" but that has more to do with it being the kind of "time stamped" song that will just be embarrassing in 5 years.

    Great music is great music.
