OMAHA, Neb. -- A 12-year-old boy was dropped off at a Lincoln hospital Saturday after his mother drove him from George to take advantage of Nebraska's Safe Haven law, police said.

Capt. Jim Davidsaver, with the Lincoln Police Department, said the boy's mother told police she was unable to discipline her son and dropped him off just before 10 p.m.

Todd Landry, the director of the Division of Children and Family Services for the Department of Health and Human Services, said the mother drove to Nebraska from Georgia. Police are investigating to see what connections, if any, she has to Lincoln.

The boy has been placed in a residential shelter during the investigation.

What is going on with all these teens being dropped off in Nebraska as an relief to parental guidance or out of necessity?

Just the latest out-of-state parent to drop off a kid in Nebraska....the Safe Haven Law in that state was written with no age limit....most other states have a six month old age limit in their Safe Haven Law. It became news when some parents or parent from Iowa drove across the border to dump a teenager...and then I believe someone drove from Illinois to Nebraska to dump one.

yeah, i don't think this law is going to survive until January. we have a Safe Haven law in Massachusetts (voted in by ballot initiative) and i believe we take babies up to 1 week old. allowing up to age 18 is just... wow.

    UPADTE
LINCOLN, Neb. (Nov. 20) - Gov. Dave Heineman signed into law Friday a bill adding a 30-day age limit to a safe-haven law that allowed 35 children — including teenagers as old as 17 — to be abandoned at state hospitals. The law, approved hours earlier by the Legislature in a 45-3 vote, goes into effect Saturday, and makes Nebraska the 14th state with a 30-day age cap. It had been the only state with a safe-haven law without an age limit.
"I think this solves the immediate problem of adolescents being abandoned," said state Sen. Kent Rogert. "These kids are old enough to know they're being dropped off, and that's not good."

well, there's goes the "Do what I say, or I'll drop you off in Nebraska!" strategy...
  • While my children( daughter 8yrs, son 2.5 yrs) are and have been the challenge of my life...well I can not conceive abandoning them. I do think with an age limit the safe haven laws save lives. ..please no abortion debates, I have a moderate view on that. I just can not comprehend leaving your child to never see them again. ..must be a 13th gen/gen X thing.

I will never tell them they are not important or abandon them.
  • How fucked up is this scary ass, ignorant, god damned country? How is it that the conservatives have gotten through all these mandates nationally that prevent the teaching of sex ed to kids so that they might have a realistic idea of what's going on with their bodies, what to expect and have some understanding of the biology involved?? What the fuck are they so afraid of?
Then, on top of that, easy access to contraceptives is denied, morning after pills are deemed immoral by the idiot religious right.
So what's left to them? Fucking abstinence? Bullshit. Abortion and this abandonment law. Because that's who it is written for. Teens who've been persuaded they have no other options- as a result of having been denied the intellectual maturity to know beforehand and make better decisions for themselves.
Wouldn't it be wonderful to take a look at all these irresponsible adults now looking to throw away their grown children while they have the chance?
I'm not who you think i am....
  • Wow, as a conservative I take your abuse and comend you-because that is a great post-and spot on. We have become so polarized that one urging abstinence will not teach sex education. You are correct that teens must be informed, and it is statsitcally improbable that most teens will abstain completely. It is as simple and therefore as polarizing as 2nd ammendment issues.

Use a condom and help prevent unwanted preganacies, and stds-do not and you invite them. ......and yet it is okay to have unwanted pregnancies, only to abandon a child...lind of like having arms is to hunt. I think the trend is reversing, and perhaps I am not the only conservative who feels ...I did not leave the Republican party-it left me. !

IT seems awful to drop off kids you don't want. But, it's often far more awful to keep kids you don't want. I've seen a lot of what happens to unwanted children, and it's not sunshine and lollipops. Making parents who don't want or can't handle a child is mental torture to the parent that gets passed on as physical and/or mental torture to a child. Parents should be able to get "divorced" from their kids for the sake of the kids. I'm not sure what the value is, beyond economics, for "natural" parents to have to retain kids they don't want. Essentially, society's "right" to not have to pay for the upbringing of unwanted kids shouldn't trump kids' rights to have a decent life. They're here; we have a responsibility to take care of them.

It seems that some parent's may be to selfish to take on the pay that was made when they decided to play. If we are to live in a society of rules and stipulations, then perhaps the state should consider investing more capital in parenting skills. It seem that all of this plays some how into regulating society. If there becomes an sense of urgency created then people begin to accept how irresponsibility is part of a norm...thus paving the path for population control...socialistic values....
