I actually filled up for $1.85/gal yesterday. That's only because the grocery store I shop at offers "fuel perks". The more $$$ you spend at their store, the more $$$ you get discounted per gallon. Their price was $2.95/gal, I had a savings of $1.10 per gallon = $1.85/gal. Now I start back at 0 and have to accumulate savings by shopping there. I'm sure there are similar places all over the country.
I think price per barrel is controlled by the oil companies, since Saudi Arabia is basically a client state and the oil companies themselves have such a huge influence. its like they are keeping prices as high as they can to maximize profit yet low enough so as not to encourage alternative fuel development. this last summer was kind of them deciding to really get as much as they could out of us, but since there was so much talk about alternative fuel they decided to bring the price back down. Just an idea, since alternative fuel sources put companies like Exxon (with more economic pull in the world than Saudi Arabia itself) out of business. there's no way they are going to allow an alternative fuel source unless they can profit from it.

You conspiracy theorists crack me up.

The price of oil is dropping because the stock market is crashing. There's less demand for it when everybody is going bankrupt.

Price of oil has dropped like $100 a barrel in the past few months.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do

price per barrel is arbitrary...whatever they decide it to be. they pull more out of the ground price goes down, they refine more, price of gas goes down. since they control how much they take out of the ground, and how much they refine, using free market principles, they control prices.

keep supply down, prices go up. surplus=loss of profit.

this recession might affect that some, but in general the price of oil and gas is whatever they decide it to be.
  • Out here in Western NY (Dansville NY, south of Rochester) gas is $3.19 a gallon.

The funny thing is that I am 19 and I remember when I was 13 and my mom would bitch about gas being "a whopping $1.15 a gallon". I wish those days would come back.

Actually, that's extremely cheap when compared to the cost of gas around the world and when you think about the taxes, etc. that are included.
