Freedom Of Speech: Obama Is A Terrorists Best Friend

An 11-year-old Colorado boy was suspended from school after showing up for class in a T-shirt bearing the handwritten motto "Obama a terrorist's best friend."
Daxx Dalton's dad says the fifth-grader was given the choice of changing his shirt, turning it inside out or being suspended -- and he chose suspension.

Hey this is America and the boy has a right to speak his mind even if it means getting suspended for it. This could go the other way also with t-shirt that says...*McCain is a Maveprick*

Here's the full story.. Boy Suspended Over Anti-Obama Shirt

I wouldn't let an 11 year old go to school with either t-shirt however if that parent is stupid enough to let that go to school he should have the right to do so.

    They knew the consequence.

  • Freedom of speech is great, but there's no right to insult and slander. Btw, the parents, not only the boy should get an extra lesson in politics and general decency.

It's amazing that some are so comfortable in there racist view to the point of passing it on to their children, NOW that's sad very sad.

You can see why in a way Obama has tread lightly in everything he say and does as he runs for President. As educated as he is some still say he's not smart enough for the job even after comparing him to McCain.

  • I am a huge proponent of the first amendment, but schools have always had the right to limit freedom of speech. I have no idea what the details are here, but the key would be whether the school is selectively enforcing this against a particular ideology. I believe it is acceptable for a school to have a policy against allowing political slogans across the board, for example. In my opinion, a better policy though would be to allow political speech, so long as it is respectful and not profane.

As in "Obama '08" = OK

"McCain is a Douche" = not OK (although accurate)

I think schools are able to place limits on freedom of speech through dress codes (nothing deemed indecent or inflamatory), rules about respecting others (can't cuss out your teacher), etc. I know when I was in high school we weren't allowed to wear gang colors. The high school where my mom teaches doen't allow Playboy bunnies, beer slogans, etc. on shirts. You wouldn't want your elementary school kid to be exposed to half-naked women at school, etc.

i guess the kid will have to go back to wearing his old shirt, which reads:

    "my dad is ignorant white-trash"
