(CBS) NEW YORK With President Bush's top military and diplomatic advisers on Iraq due to deliver a major progress report on the president's "surge" strategy, a new CBS News/New York Times poll finds that an increasing number of Americans believe the troop buildup in Iraq is having a positive impact.

Do you think this is true that the surge is working? I beg to differ, working for whom is the question?

More on Bush and his surge reporting: CRS: Bush Administration Has Intensified False Reporting On Al Qaeda Since ‘Surge’ Began.
Attempting to drum up public support for the war in Iraq in July, President Bush referred to al Qaeda 95 times in a single speech, claiming the war in Iraq has become the central front in the fight against al Qaeda (AQI):

There’s also a debate about al Qaeda’s role in Iraq. Some say that Iraq is not part of the broader war on terror. They complain when I say that the al Qaeda terrorists we face in Iraq are part of the same enemy that attacked us on September the 11th. … I say that there will be a big defeat in Iraq and it will be the defeat of al Qaeda.

how can most americans know if it is working when most americans have not been there to form an opinion one way or another? i think the answer depends on who you ask and what you read or listen to. the more important question is do the iraqi's believe that the surge is working?

Biden seems to think it is not working and that Patreas is "dead flat wrong".

  • (Gullible) Americans believe the story they are told.

Ask the troops what they think, otherwise it's what they call "hearsay" i.e. not admissible in court, and for very good reason.

  • most Americans don't even know what the problem is, let alone understand it. How can they have any clue about what is or is not working.

one of the major problems, you can market opinion, no facts needed, comprehension, or intelligence needed.

The surge had a goal, to give all the factions in Iraq time and space to find common ground and make peace with each other. That isn't happening. Shiite vs Sunni, Shiite vs Shiite, Sunni vs Sunni, Sunni vs Kurd, Shiite vs Kurd, tribe vs tribe, there peace between each other is all that matters, everything else doesn't even qualify as a band aid.

anyone see Meet the Press today? great discussion about the Iraqi national police, and the minister of the interior that controls them.

    very well stated.

You have an appreciable level of understanding. Sadly I think a lot of Americans think troop surge means make it better.

    It so distorted from reality.

sadly the average working guy doesn't stand a chance of really understanding it without concerted daily effort.

    agreed, effort is needed.

I generally watch Chris Matthews (Hardball), and Tim Russert (Meet the Press). Whenever things come up that aggravate me, or excite me politically/environmentally/socially, I try and take the time to research a little more from other sources, blogs are great for finding sources, but I generally stay away from all the opinionating in places like the DailyKos, which I can't stand. You can't have an opposing opinion on anything, because it'll be deleted (which I think someone brought up last week).

I tryly believe no news source is reliable alone anymore.

Sad, so much money to be made in entertainment news, and the real is constantly shorting fact.

Not a Surge... an Escalation. That's what' going to need to occur in order for Iraq to become the Bush Vision of the Middle East. Iraq needs security... the 'surge' is not a surge. What happens when the U.S. troops numbers drop? Are you counting on the Iraqi Security Forces to step up? I ain't.
The troops have to go in... and not come out for a long, long time if we want to 'Win' this thing. And what do we win?
It's time to cut our losses, get back to the hunt for Bin Laden... 'Win' in Afghanistan and re-deploy our National Guardsmen to patrol our borders.

  • i shall rebadge, and remarket this "surge" as a vault.

and it will be tasty as fuck.

NO. This surge is not working. 17 troops -- that's 17 young people fighting for our country -- died between yesterday and today. The government isn't counting car bomb victims in its headcount anymore, let alone any Iraqi who happens to be found dead on the side of the road if he was shot from the front instead of from behind....

The Iraqi government is in shambles with half the members leaving in entirety instead of just for summer recess, and most of our boys and girls over there no longer believe in the cause they are fighting for (and who can blame them?).

No, this surge is not working. But tell that to Petraeus who says that instead of waiting until September (which is now upon us) for his answer, we now have to wait until at least March of 2008, while only letting the few thousand troops home who would've had to come home anyway simply because they have already served their 15 months over there without leave.

No, this surge is not working. This OCCUPATION in a country in the middle of a civil war, due to our preemptive strike upon it in the first place, isn't working!

Start bringing our troops home NOW, dammit!

It's ten times more accurate than Chertoff's gut feeling, heh heh....

But jokes aside, how many REALLY, REALLY think this surge is working?

    Raise your hands.

How can ANYONE say this surge is working when there's shit like this happening in the streets of IRAQ.

Caution the pics are very gruesome.

  • hmmmmmm, interesting. on cnn this afternoon, really saying quite the opposite, that most americans are extremely dissatisfied with how it's all going and being handled.

    I have a question...
One of the arguement points that the War Supporters embrace is the Iraqi Sunnis are taking arms to oust Al Qaeda from places like Anbar Province... my question is...
What happens when Al Qaeda is ousted?
Do those war supporters think the Iraqi Sunni insurgents will simply turn in their weapons? If so, what is the basis... based upon past behaviour shown by insurgents... of your arguement?
