It was revealed last week that firefighters are being trained to not only keep an eye out for illegal materials in the course of their duties, but even to report back any expression of discontent with the government.

A year ago, Homeland Security gave security clearances to nine New York City fire chiefs and began sharing intelligence with them. Even before that, fire department personnel were being taught "to identify material or behavior that may indicate terrorist activities" and were also "told to be alert for a person who is hostile, uncooperative or expressing hate or discontent with the United States."

HOMELAND SECURITY: Firefighters asked to report people who express discontent with the government

To me the last thing a firefighter wants to worry about is what kinds books you have in your bedroom when comes in to put out a fire. I KNOW I've books that could be considered "discont" cause I like to be inform and to see both or ALL sides to a story or news.

Do you think this is something FF should entail in their already filled job description?

  • Looks like it's sliding into the twilight zone when the people sent to save your life and property have become spies for the government.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

Unlike law enforcement officials, firemen can go onto private property without a warrant, not only while fighting fires but also for inspections. "It's the evolution of the fire service," said a Phoenix, AZ fire chief of his information-sharing arrangement with law enforcement.

This is blatant grounds for a 4th Ammendment, unconstitutional SEARCH & seizure case.

That fireman are even allowed in to your house without your permission simply to inspect it for firecode is at odds with the constitution.

It is only accepted because most people are willing to sacrifice their immediate privacy for the benefit of public safety.

However they only do it because they have assumed that in such a situation, the fireman is going to act as a doctor or lawyer, and only report back on firehazards, not violate individual privacy on unrelated matters.

If fireman are "evolving", being given high level military intellgence and being ordered to report back on your emotional bent and belongings is so far out of line with the constitution, i can't imagine not protesting.

    This is pretty sick shit.
I don't care the intent, and terrorists and all.
Read my damn signature line again and moan in agony.

    :(
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

    Jammers, et al...Fellow Humanbeings:

Last summer I was at a favorite swimming hole in the woods. All the locals go there to seek refuge. While I was sliding down the mountainside, I came across 5 fire personell. I asked them if there was a problem down there, (becasue sometimes the kids like to scale the rocks and jump in--dangerous--maybe there had been an traumatic accident) Anyway, almost as if they were chiming a chorus, they said, "We're not cops."

I think that fire personell, lifesaving community members, possible resist trying to play mandated reporter (recorder). But as laws and regulations keep confining US citizens, autonomity will become a faint memory of the past.

The only way to make change is the efforts that are presented in forums like this so that alternative insights can filter through. Thanks for being part of this filtering system...

    Peace.
