A presidential campaign tradition ... the Alfred E Smith charity dinner in NYC where the candidates take some time just before the election to poke fun at everyone, and themselves ... these are BOTH really funny.

McCain went first, so, makes sense to watch his first ...

Both were hilarious, but I liked Obama's more (but then again I'm all for subtle digs at McCain).

Very good stuff all around, nice to escape some of the normal campaign BS.
All the rusted signs, we ignore throughout our lives, choosing the shiny ones instead...

And he who forgets, will be destined to remember...
  • I don't know, they were both pretty funny. Gotta give the edge to McCain though. Obama just doesn't have much comedic timing, it was a little strange considering how charismatic he tends to be otherwise.

Of course, it also seemed like Obama was reading his speech for the first time...maybe he was busy preparing for the debate.

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

    I loved both speeches!

i really enjoyed both of them. im sure they werent of any help to those who are still undecided though, as they both seemed very likable there. it was the first time that i can remember not being extremely frustrated and angry when mccain spoke.
  • Amazing... Both candidates had great jokes. It was refreshing to escape from the campaign bullshit. This event should get the same coverage as the debates. It would be good for the zealots on both sides to chill for a change.
    the Minions
  • I watched those last night on Rachel Maddow. Both were really funny.

And I agree, Strangest Tribe. It was such a stark contrast to the hate the is bubbling up on both sides over this election. Everyone just needs to stop fostering hate and division.

My favorite line was Barack Obama's, that his middle name was given to him by someone who obviously didn't realize he'd run for president. :D

That was really good. Definately a nice change of pace. Both speeches were really funny; McCain's especially.

It's this kind of thing that makes your realize that these guys are human and capable of being civil. It's often lost in the heat of a presidential campaign

It's good to inject some humor into this race. It's been a long and bloody road.

    I don't know...

I think it kind of gives you hope that after the smoke has cleared from this nasty fucking political campaign that eventually Obama and McCain could actually get along when this thing is done; whatever the outcome.

I think it's benificial for both men to come together and work towards a common ground rather than try and destroy each other.

But today is another day...Storm Clouds are coming, and I'm sure we'll get back to the blood and battle.

I saw both of them live last night, and I also thought both were great. I laughed a little more for McCain's speech, which was surprising. Both of them had great material, but McCain's delivery was a little better IMO.

And I am an Obama guy.

I was at that dinner last year and my parents and sister attended this year. Alfred E. Smith, the dinner's namesake was my great-great grandfather so each year we get a few tickets. Haven't been able to go on an election year yet, hopefully in 2012. Both speeches looked very funny and it's definitely nice to see both candidates have a good time with each other instead of the usual nonsense.

Politics is such a weird profession. Yesterday you were calling me a terrorist sympathizer and a socialist, and I was calling you a war-monger and a whore to corporate interests, but tonight we're yukking it up. The self-delusion you must need to practice in that profession is astonishing.

    I personally liked:

    I think my favorite line of Obama's bit, if not the whole thing, was this one;

"My middle name was given to me by someone who obviously didn't think I'd ever run for President."
  • If I was running McCain's campaign, I would put that guy on the stump everyday. Not the stand up comedian routine, but that approach.... A couple of well timed jokes, not taking himself so serious, and not being the "angry" John McCain. It really is night and day from the loose guy we saw last night (and for most of his career), and the guy who is running now.

I was a bit disappointed in Obama's delivery. I think McCain did better.

Though I liked Obama's line about Fox News accusing him of fathering two African American children in wedlock.
I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.
