Maybe in Thailand it is. Over here in the states, I'd be hard pressed to make a direct comparison between the government and the mafia. I know there are a lot of people on this board who love to make the american government out to look like the evil empire. And then there are those people who think americans are actually falling under the thumb of fascism.

The government isn't perfect. In fact, it's far from perfect. But, government itself is a symptom rather than a solution. Government exists because mankind is not advanced enough to govern himself. So, it isn't any wonder that any attempts to compensate for that will always result in failure in some form or another.

I wouldn't call it legal mafia. But that would also depend on the government in question, I guess. But if we start from the typical western liberal democracies, I would definitely not use such a comparison. Maybe the mafia and the government arguably do some of the same things in principle, but being a world of difference in practice. Kinda like the policeman and the hitman may be similar in many ways (carries gun, kills people), I wouldn't call the police all murderers and hitmen.

That being said, one should always be critical and demanding towards one's government. I won't trust it blindly, but neither will I be paranoid of it.

I've actually thought of local governments in this way. Namely: parking tickets. They charge you to park on the fucking street. Like, the amount they take from you in no way compares to the amount you take from them by parking there, so they're really just charging you a "protection fee," kind of like mobsters.

    Therefore

    Vote Ron Paul.

As I said, that comparison is like comparing police and hired killers. There is a difference, and a very significant one.
And if the argument for voting Paul is being annoyed with tickets, well.... ;)

Well, if you don't pay your protection fee (taxes) long enough then they knock down your door and kill your ass.

Michael: My father's no different than any other powerful man (Kay laughs), any man who's responsible for other people. Like a senator or a president.

Kay: You know how naive you sound?

    Michael: Why?

Kay: Senators and presidents don't have men killed.

Michael: Oh, who's being naive, Kay?
