Joe the Plumber, the unlikely folk hero of the US presidential election, has signalled his willingness to dip his own toe in the political waters, by running for Congress in two years time.

Samuel Joe Wurzelbacher's campaign confrontation over tax with Democratic White House hopeful Barack Obama has been seized on by Republican John McCain, who has made the issue a centrepiece of his campaign during the final week of the race.
But now Joe the Plumber has bowed to growing pressure from grassroots Republicans in his home state of Ohio to consider launching his own campaign.
Mr Wurzelbacher told conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham that he is thinking of challenging Democratic Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur in her Toledo area seat in 2010.
"I'll tell you what, we'd definitely be in one heck of a fight but, you know, I'd be up for it." Miss Ingraham then offered to help him with his PR strategy if he does eventually stand for public office.
On Saturday, he confirmed his intentions in a further interview with Fox News but made clear that he has not yet had talks with Republican leaders in Ohio, who have previously said they would welcome him running.
Joe the Plumber hit the headlines during the third presidential debate when Mr McCain drew attention to Mr Wurzelbacher's claims that he would be worse off under Mr Obama's tax plan if he buys the plumbing business he currently works for.
Since then he has become the signature voice of "ordinary Joes" on the campaign trail, in high demand on television and talk radio, where commentators say he has often made a more persuasive case for Republican economic plans than the McCain-Palin ticket itself.
Mr Wurzelbacher seems unabashed that it has since been proved he would be better off under Mr Obama's tax plans, saying he does not approve of the Democrat's proposal for government handouts for the less well off.
In another interview last week he described Mr Obama as "very average" when they met.
As he became a symbol of Middle America, reporters pored over his past and discovered he owes taxes and is not actually a registered plumber.
It has now emerged that officials in Ohio are investigating whether government computer systems were illegally accessed to acquire personal information about him. Information on Mr Wurzelbacher's driving licence was pulled from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles database and further data obtained from a child support agency.

I think anyone who votes for Joe the Plumber deserves Joe the Plumber.
Really, who better to run for congress than an unlicensed plumber?
It's genius.0 -

Am I so sick of this Joe the Plumber BS, McCain has mentioned Joe the Plumber 5 times already in the last 10 minutes of his speech in NM.
It'll be a sad and very dark day if somehow this old man wins on November 4th :("Without the album covers, where do you clean your pot?" - EV0 -
If he was smart, he would get his license and start his own business, call it "Joe the Plumber" and put a big picture of John McCain on his van with some good quote about how great Joe the Plumber is.My whole life

It's not, just a logical extension. Got to agree with you about the last two elections too.
People always wonder where these terrible candidates come from, but, you know, look around--it's just us. Maybe we're not that great.0 -
Joe's years of public service and his incredible ability to cut through the crap and get to the heart of an issue make him a great candidate. He is supremely qualified.
Hell, if he would have questioned Obama's tax plan before McCain chose Palin, Joe might be on the ticket for V.P.

yea because he's so qualified for congress. Not that we don't have unqualified people in congress, I just don't think we should add more. Is he running before or after he exploits his current situation by signing his major book deal ?West Palm 2000 I & II/West Palm '03/Tampa '03/Kissimmee '04/Vic Theater '07/West Palm '08/Tampa '08/NYC MSG I & II '08/Philly Spectrum III & IV '09/Cleveland '10/Bristow '10/PJ20 I & II 2011/Pensacola '12/Pittsburgh '13/Denver '140

In your mind.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of people who want bigger government, know next to nothing about effective foreign policy, and seek to silence all voices and opinions which go against their beliefs.
Not like McCain is that great anyway, but he's better.I pledge to you a government that will not only work well, but wisely, its ability to act tempered by prudence, and its willingness to do good, balanced by the knowledge that government is never more dangerous than when our desire to have it help us blinds us to its great power to harm us.

Ok in my opinion McCain and the Republicans are bigger government even though they run partially on the platform of the opposite. How is he less government? He supported the bailout (So did Obama) but McCain also wants the GOVERNMENT to buy up all these bad mortgages. If Palin were president she would probably seek to reverse Roe v. Wade thereby promoting more GOVERNMENT regulation of a woman's body and right to choose. Obama doesn't need a ton of foreign policy when his running mate is one of the most experienced foreign policy guys in the country. Lastly, how is he silencing all voices and opinions which go against his beliefs? I've seen Obama tell his crowd not to boo McCain at least twice. He told them not to do that, and "just go vote." Wouldn't that be the opposite of what you said?West Palm 2000 I & II/West Palm '03/Tampa '03/Kissimmee '04/Vic Theater '07/West Palm '08/Tampa '08/NYC MSG I & II '08/Philly Spectrum III & IV '09/Cleveland '10/Bristow '10/PJ20 I & II 2011/Pensacola '12/Pittsburgh '13/Denver '140 -

So I guess that means you didn't vote for Bush? Seems he's done all those things."Almost all those politicians took money from Enron, and there they are holding hearings. That's like O.J. Simpson getting in the Rae Carruth jury pool." -- Charles Barkley0 -
