**Canada Plans Two Military Facilities In Arctic**
http://www.rferl.org/featuresarticle/2007/08/FD7AC568-FF37-4AF1-9250-FB8C44B95C14.html

"August 11, 2007 -- Canada says it plans to build two new military facilities in the Arctic, including a deep-water port and training center for Canadian military personnel.

The announcement on August 10 by Prime Minister Stephen Harper came a week after Russian explorers using submarines symbolically staked a claim to the region by planting a flag at a depth of 4,200 meters, beneath the ice of the North Pole.

The Russian effort has been regarded as a move to help advance Russia's claims to oil, gas, and mineral resources on the Arctic seabed.

Under international law, none of the surrounding Arctic states -- Russia, the United States, Canada, Norway, or Denmark -- owns the North Pole or the Arctic Ocean.

Sovereignty rights are guided by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Under international law, Russia, Canada, Norway, the United States, and Denmark currently each control 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zones in the Arctic Ocean extending from their coastlines.

But the law also allows a country to file a claim on additional territory beyond its exclusive economic zone if it can define the outer limits of its continental shelf -- in the Russian case the Lomonosov Ridge.

Moscow said the expedition would help prove that the North Pole is a geological extension of Russia."

..............

It's pretty safe to say that it's gonna be Darth Putin against Stephen Skywalker. Russia's definitely got the AT-AT's... let's hope Canada's got some tow cables!

  • We will just have a hockey tournament to decide who gets the territory. I like our chances. The U.S. should have used this method with Iraq.

Oh, man, I will never forget getting off the train in Banff when I was 17 years old in 1981, after days of train travel, and on the way further west to join my boyfriend. I thought it was the most amazingly beautiful place in the world. It was truly breathtaking. :)

Edit:...er, I might be referring to Jasper....it's one of the two, whichever is on the cross-Canada train route. I get my sleepy little postcard mountain towns mixed up. :o

Haha, nice...but Canada isn't taking on anyone's military. The U.S. is.

Remember that kid in school with the big brother who could kick anyone's ass, so he picked and chose his fights and he knew that no matter what, his bro would be there for him? Well, this is a fight Canada feels may be worth fighting, so we can start the fight and then let the big ol' USA come and take care of the dirty work while we have our little nappy...

The US would most likely be interested in protecting their arctic DEW lines even if the cold war is over.
