I don't think man's so-called "intervention" and natural selection are two different things.
...
And as for Natural Selection and Man's impact on the environment that causes the extinction of species, they are not the same. Animals, such as wolves, will never evolve to the point of bullet proof fur.
I hope you understand that the evolutionary process takes many years to occur and does not happen overnight. It took millions of years for predators to get binocular vision... and millions of years for prey to perfect their field of vision.
And when you spoke of past mass extinctions...
"At different points in the earth's history, more species were being killed off than could adapt in the short term and that seemed to work out pretty well so far."
Those were part of the Natural Process. Which means, it'll work off pretty well in the future if the next mass extinction wipes out the primates, including Man, and lets evolution take its course amongst the remaining species.

Hail, Hail!!!
Darwin wasn't deeply religious in any way. From his autobiography, "The mystery of the beginning of all things is insoluble to us; and I for one must be content to remain an Agnostic."
Any ideas of him being religious come from the propaganda machine of the religious.
I wish people would stop bringing up this issue at all.
Also, there is a difference between "Intelligent Design" and "Creationism." What we're talking about here is Creationism. Intelligent Design is much more broad and generally has the ability to fit in with evolutionary theory.
Creationism = The creation story as it's told in the Bible is what literally happened.
Intelligent Design = God took part in the creation of the universe, but not at all as it literally happened according to the Bible. He just caused it to happen and still influences the universe in various ways.
Creationism= ID. Don't be fooled-they are one and the same. period. Evolution is a testable sceintific theory as opposed to one which can not be tested like ID because they require proving god.
The fundametal problem people have with Evo is that it illustrates rather eloquently our shared kinship with other species. In a nutshell it hurts our 'special' perception of our place in the universe. So people try and reduce the implications of evolution by sticking their head in the sand so to speak.
