RALEIGH, N.C. (June 27) - Elizabeth Edwards pleaded Tuesday with Ann Coulter to "stop the personal attacks," a day after the conservative commentator said she wished Edwards' husband, Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, had been killed by terrorists.
Elizabeth Edwards pleaded Tuesday with Ann Coulter to "stop the personal attacks."
"The things she has said over the years, not just about John but about other candidates, lowers the political dialogue at precisely the time we need to raise it," Edwards said by phone on MSNBC's "Hardball" program, where Coulter was a guest.
Elizabeth Edwards said she did not consult her husband before confronting Coulter on the air, adding that she felt the pundit's remarks were "a dialogue on hatefulness and ugliness.
"It debases political dialogue," Edwards said. "It drives people away from the process. We can't have a debate about issues if you're using this kind of language."
Coulter responded with a laugh and charged that Edwards was calling on her to stop speaking altogether. She questioned why Elizabeth Edwards was making a phone call on behalf of her husband, and she criticized John Edwards for "stealing doctors' money" during his successful career as a trial lawyer.
"I don't think I need to be told to stop writing by Elizabeth Edwards, thank you," Coulter said.
On ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday, Coulter was asked about a March speech in which she used a gay slur to refer to Edwards.
"If I'm going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot," Coulter said Monday, picking up on remarks made by HBO's Bill Maher. Maher suggested in March that "people wouldn't be dying needlessly" if Vice President Dick Cheney had been killed in an insurgent attack in Afghanistan.

Ann Coulter is gross.
"Hi, I'm Ann Coulter. I overpronounce words because it makes me sound smart while I spew biggoted diatribes!"

Ann Coulter drinks the blood of unbaptised babies. That is a fact.0

When I heard a commercial advertising that Coulter would appear on Hardball, my ears fell off. That made me decide to not watch that show because I just knew that my eyes would fall out.

I usually watch hardball, but I skipped last night because of her being on it...
I did see a segment of it on msnbc this morning with the call in... Edwards was just asking her to stop personal attacks like making fun of her son dying and Coulter basically acted like an 8 year old with her fingers in her ears going la-la-la-la-la... well not literally, but her only comeback was that Edwards was telling her to quit writing and trying to take away her speech... I guess if you are a one trick pony like coulter, taking away personal attacks and hate speech pretty much would take away her entire career. My whole life
was like a picture

She's made fun of their son Wade dying? I hadn't heard that.
I really tried to watch this last night, but it was just what I expected it to be and I couldn't take more than 10 minutes of her hate filled crap.0 -

Not directly, but more so of John taking advantage of it I think. I don't know the exact context, but one of the examples that Elizabeth brought up when she called was that Coulter said after Wade's death that John should drive around with an "ask me about my dead son" bumpersticker on it. Real classy....My whole life

actually Coulter didnt get "bitch slapped", Edwards sounded like a bitter old lady...."stop talking about us" wha wha wha
how about stop raising illegal funds for your campaign?
granted Coulter is out there sometimes, but in this instance i disagree with the title of the thread
and im going to be the minority here i know, i know0 -

Things like your comment right there about raising illegal funds is exactly what the debate should be... I don't know of any illegal fundraising by Edwards, but issues raised like that should be on the table... when you take coulters approach and venomously attack someone personally, I think that is a worthless "contribution" to any possible dialog about issues.
While there are plenty of commentators on both sides who make money by taking the negative approach of how the other side governs or approaches problems (instead of actually offering realistic solutions), but she makes her money on personal cheapshots and outright personal attacks. My whole life

oh i totally agree with you about the debate 100% and the fundraising, but you know what you are getting with Coulture and i dont see why this is such a suprise with people
alot of people make money of making cheapshots...Bill Maher, Keith Olberman, Bill O'Reilly, the list goes on and on...0 -
Keith Olbermann, to my knowledge, has never publicly wished for an increase in the amount of innocent civilians to be killed overseas, nor has he ever made a joke about someone's child dying in a car accident. Olbermann's a pundit with a clear political perspective to be sure, but he's also a thoughtful, decent human being. I don't know how the same could ever be said about Coulter."Mama here comes midnight with the dead moon in its jaws." --J. Molina0

yeah i just love political radio talk show hosts...i dont care what side of the fence they lean on...there is always entertainment to be found0 -
What did that video clip have to do with what I wrote about Keith Olbermann? Did he make fun of someone's child having died? Did he express his wish that the U.S. purposefully kill thousands more innocent people abroad?
Or did he insult Beck, who then just insulted him back (by accusing Olbermann of McCarthyism (?) no less)?
Not a very substantial clip there Pjalive."Mama here comes midnight with the dead moon in its jaws." --J. Molina0
