I visited the FDR Memorial in Washington last year, and I have to confess I was brought to tears by some of the quotes of his that were displayed beautifully on granite walls throughout the parklike setting. He was brilliant, and tho I realize that all politicians have speeches written for them, it is clear that he was an intelligent, compassionate person who also happened to be the leader of the free world.

The reason I wept is that I compared FDR to the Idiot in Chief we have now, and it was more clear than ever how ignorant Dubya is, and I cannot imagine ANY of his quotes ever belonging on a granite wall to be viewed, appreciated and memorialized.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States, Barack Obama."

"Obama's main opponent in this election on November 4th (was) not John McCain, it (was) ignorance."~Michael Moore

Check out the Lincoln Memorial. Etched on the wall are words from his second inaugural address... I remember standing there reading that.. made me feel humble and hopeful.

sure, of course- i did, and the jefferson memorial, too, which is not only inspiring but beautiful as well. i was struck by all of them, but i think in terms of modern presidents, the contrast between fdr and gwb was depressingly STARK.

I don't think the character matters too much. Bush had some intellect before he became President, then he was miraculously transformed into a moron. I think the actions of a President are relative to the forces that influence them. If the President doesn't act in the interest of such forces, they might end up dead.

  • In no way is this a defense of President Bush and his horrible tenure in office, but um, FDR had Japanese internment camps. Inaugural speeches are propaganda.

FDR also created our entitlement class. He was the architect of many big government programs and created the nanny state we are fighting against today. One of the worst presidents in history. In that respect he's much like GWB. Big government, big spender. Taxation, price controls, rationing, internment camps. One hell of a legacy.

And the one thing that he and Bush both had in common was that they realized there are times to stand up and fight for something

  • The exaggerated role of the executive branch is definitely a running theme in both of these administrations.

i have recently taken advantage of the amazing work performed by the CCC when i stayed in the Monongahela National Forest a few weeks ago... shows that good decisions and quality leadership can still be beneficial decades later for the public and the country (the public interest seems to be a strange concept to the current crew)

this current jackass is unprotecting and opening for corporate rape... as opposed to preserving and maintaining for public use
