Lent.
i don't get it. would Jesus be proud of me if i gave up cheese for 40 days? i can imagine him just shaking his head and rolling his eyes this time of year.
so, you give up some kinda food (that you probably shouldn't be eating much of anyways) for forty days and that proves your faithfullness. (?)
when Jesus was led into the desert to be tempted by the devil, he first fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, thus putting his body and possibly his mind in a weakened state. how strong was his faith to overcome the lies and temptation!
wouldn't he be proud if instead we just tried to be better people. condition our minds and bodies and faith to be strong, should we ever find ourselves in a similar situation? i think i'm doing alright in the "love vs. hate" arena, but i could get off my lazy ass and do more for those around me. and play a part in protecting the earth form ruination.

i don't get it. those that do, please feel free to make me understand.

I gave up cheese last year, and I was miserable....
Giving up cheese ment that I had to give up all my favorite food....lasagna, pizza, cheeseburgers, or whatever. However, I agree that that Jesus would laugh at us today and say..."really, cheese?" But, to me it was difficult, so I think it is the thought that counts. This year I gave up all "junk" foods. No snacks, chips, chocolate, etc. It has been pretty tough too. I like lent, if for nothing else, than to teach myself discipline and empathy.
It is good in theory really.
This is right.
The original poster didn't get the significance of giving up cheese. Bad example, as he/she obviously doesn't care about cheese. The idea, I think, is to show allegiance to God through depriving yourself of certain things which are important to you, but which can be distractions in your spiritual life.
Look at me. Here I am on the Pit at work, and guess what I gave up for Lent... going on the Pit at work. This is the point. It's not supposed to be easy.

What would be showing a link to that time period of that particular year? That's why this year, and I think I finally get it this year, I gave up some fears, but these particular fears have to do with running, and running at times is a form of prayer for me. I have to say I feel so self-righteous because I finally get it, but ultimately I realize it's just my own interpretation.
Man, you should have seen me after I ran my 10 miles in one run a week ago. I was definitely praying then oooooowheeeee!

personally I think we should either raise taxes or change to a communist system. we can distribute labor equally and everything I ever need comes from the government.
what do ya think?
I'm not going to think. It'll make the 40 days fly right by. And it makes your idea above sound just great!
Cheerio.....

This is true. I'm sorry but I think modern day lent is absolutely ridiculous.
naděje umírá poslední
I mean, I'm no fan of Lent, but "absolutely ridiculous"??? What's up with that?
I'll tell you what is ridiculous. not spreading around our labor equally and having much more government involvement. its absurd.
Totally. You're preaching to the converted man. Viva La Revolucion...

actually...i'm a big fan of cheese. which makes this a difficult challenge.
i'm really only doing to test my willpower (which isn't so good).
i still think the whole thing is goofy.
sorry
Sorry. My bad
Still, I agree, the testing of willpower by itself doesn't seem like incentive enough.
