LBJ vs. Bush

Aren't LBJ and Bush quite similar when you think about it?

Both started unpopular wars but also pressed for massive spending at home.

Guns and Butter!

Is it fair to call Bush a conservative Republican when he's done nothing of the sort? If we are opposed to big government, then we are opposed to George W. Bush.

How can we support the Republican party when it says it won't make government bigger when it wants government to spy domestically, start unending foreign wars, grow government-run healthcare...

The Republicans and Democrats are truly no longer very different. But, it's not for the reasons that Rage Against the Machine was saying in 2000. The parties both seek to grow an imposing and ever-present government that monitors all facets of your life.

For liberals:

How can you trust a government to both run medicare and social security but you will not allow it to spy on you? When you allow the government such vast resources to pay for those programs, it becomes impossible to limit what it can do to the people without their consent. When you ignore the constitution in favor of the "greater good," corruption is necessarily entailed. Just look at European governments.
All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.

Valid points, but without the attack on 9/11 , I think that Bush would have been pretty conservative on a lot of the things you pointed out.

I'm not making excuses, but the presidency of W definitely ended up being something that he could'nt possibly have campaigned on.

That's very true. I would argue that a more temperate leader would have considered the ramifications of global pre-emption, though. When that is your theory, war can never end because everyone in the world is a possible threat to U.S. power and interests. Where does it end?

Two of the worst....easily....both men wanted to be somebody that they weren't.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
