oh sure. i'm not saying reconstruction was the most awesome thing. i was just looking for some positives, of which, sharecropping was not one. but that wasn't forced by the fed govt was it? isn't that what the plantation owners thought to do for money?
Who was the landowner post-war.....yes......majority might have been the antebellum owners.....it probably varies greatly from state to state.

No......not really...simply because they fought everybody else who left Yugoslavia. Originally, the powers that be in Serbia wanted to keep the old Yugo borders intact.
true. i was just thinking along the lines of the soviet union. i think it would be hard to compare the US and secession to other nations because we have such a different government. there is no one like us! we win!

True........however the fracturing of our country has always made for good science fiction type stories.

definitely.
but us state secession is fascinating to me. i do think our nation is too big and would like to think more about a confederation of states. when our nation was born the population was so much smaller. i wonder if the founders ever thought it would turn out like this. with our size i just can't see the fed gov being anything but moderate as a whole (well unless a president abuses exec priv). granted, states have conservative/liberal, rural/urban struggles of their own, but maybe they'd be easier to manage. i don't know.

I would like to think that they never, ever imagined a federal government of such size..........and one so unafraid to trample on some of our basic rights.
